7-052 Service Parts a Topics January, 1987 8874-3 rae Subject MVT Accumulator Tank Ret Engine Shop Manaal OR Manual Fim Card oer B The accumulator tank used ‘on Mechanical Variable Timing (MVT) engines has been obsoleted for production and service. See Fig. 1. This tank must not be confused with the Rapid Advance Mechanism (RAM) tank. The MVT actuator, powered by air pressure, varies engine timing via an eccentric in the camfollower assembly. The accumulator tank, also known as the "small air tank”, slows the plunger speed of the MVT actuator. The accumulator tank effectively doubles the volume of air in the actuator and delays the transition from advanced to retarded engine timing. The delay serves to control smoke levels during engine acceleration and deceleration. The accumulator tank was obsoleted because: * The MVT Oiling System was filling the tank with oil and eliminating the delay in timing change. * The only production engines that presently use the air tank (Big Cam III) are not certified for California (CARB) and do not require the delay in engine timing. Air tanks that are leaking do not need to be replaced. The actuator must be plugged at the actuator tower if the tank and steel line are removed.
