A special procedure and CPL 0988 has been approved and released to correct the problem. This procedure cannot be used on California engines as they will not meet CARB regulations. The original fuel pump code was 4212. The originial injector was Part No. 3047982. Modification Procedure 1. Remove the engine rock shield, if required. Remove and calibrate the fuel pump to Fuel Pump Code 4440. Refer to Table 1. Stamp “RE4440" on the fuel pump data plate for identification. 2. Remove and rebuild the injectors. Refer to Table 2. Flow the injectors to 190-BK (ST-790 Test Stand) or 201 to 203 mm*/stroke (Hartridge 215 and 290). Set the intemal top stop setting to 0.242 inch. Inscribe "3062596" on the injector adapter for identification. Refer to Figure 1. Do NOT install the injectors until step nine. Fig. 1 Mark Injector 3. Remove the cap (1) from the top of the MVT actuator housing on the engine. Apply air pressure to the MVT solenoid valve and activate plunger, and spacer all the way up to full advance. Refer to Figure 3. Hote: If this step is attempted, prior to the removal ofthe injectors, it might be necessary to bar the engine with the accessory drive pulley to attain the full advance timing position. The injector train loading can restrict the cam follower movement, the valve with 24 volts. This will move the MVT rack, Fig. 3 Apply Air and Voltage to MVT 5. When the MVT is in the full advance position, remove the spacer hold down capscrew (2). Discard the capscrew @) and spacer @). Refer to Figure 3. 6. Install a 3.25 inch long by 7/16 dia. UNF capscrew (4), Part No, flat washer (6). Refer to Figure 4. The MVT system is now mechanically locked in the ADVANCE timing mode. Install the actuator cap (1). Remove the air supply and the 24 volt wire from the solenoid valve. Refer to Figure 5. Use a standard 5 to 6 indb torque wrench for settin, feat 1g the proper torque at zero lash. Note: The MVT system MUST be in ADVANCE before the in| jectors aro set. If the injectors are set when the timing ign retard, the injactor cups can be damaged due to excess plunger travel whan ne ‘engine crankshaft is over. 10. Install the rebuilt fuel pump. Connect the throttle linkage and the fuel pump solenoid wires. 11. Remove tho engine data plate and replace it with a new data plate, Part No. 3045551. Stamp the blank plate Cer ng cngine serial no, date in service, shop order no., model, HP, APM, configuration CID, family. and rew CPL 988. Stamp FF112 in the ECS box. Note: This data plate Is for 49 state certiied engines. The modifications described in thie topic are not CARB Certified. The modified engines still contain the camshaft, pistons, turbocharger, etc. as stated In CPL 677, 12. Test the engine, 13. Install the engine rock shield, if required.
