BIOGRAPHY BENITO JUÁREZ

Benito Juárez was born in San Pablo Guelatao, Oaxaca, on March 21,TH 1806. He was the son of
Marcelino Juárez and Brígida García (peasants). He was orphaned at 3 years old and was raised
by his grandparents. He studied Law and when he graduated in 1834 he began to work defending
the indigenous people. At the same time, he was a teacher and held important positions in
Oaxaca.

In 1847, he was elected federal deputy and moved to Mexico City where he joined the liberals. In
1855 President Juan N. Álvarez appointed him Minister of Justice and Instruction. From this
position he cut the privileges of the clergy and the army.

In 1858, he became President of Mexico and the following year he enacted the "Law of
Nationalization of Ecclesiastical Assets". He defeated the Conservatives in 1860 with the help of
the United States. But in 1862 the French invaded Mexico and Benito Juárez led the resistance.
His troops defeated Emperor Maximilian I and shot him in 1867.

The same year, Juárez was re-elected as President of the Republic. So he expanded free and
secular education across the country.
