Key Terms:
1. British India: Indian territory under the British rule.

2. Historians: An expert in history, a person who studies and writes about history.

3. Ancient: Belonging to a period of history that is thousands of years in the past.

4. Medieval: Middle ages, the period in which features of modern society did not exist.

5. Modern period: A period which was associated with the growth of all the forces of modernity—
science, reason, democracy, liberty and equality.

6. Periodisation: Division of history into different periods.

7. Subjugation: To gain control over a country.

8. Colonisation: A process in which one country takes control of an area or a country that is not its
own and sends people from its own country to live there. This brings political, economic, social and
cultural changes.

9. Tahsildar: A revenue administrative officer in charge of obtaining taxation from a tehsil. A tehsil
was an administrative division under British Raj.

10. Archives: A place where a collection of historical documents or records of government, a family, a
place or an organisation are stored.

11. Calligraphist: A person who is specialised in the art of beautiful writing.

12. Survey: The act of examining and recording the measurements, features etc of an area of land in
order to make a map or plan of it.

13. Topography: Study and description (such as charts or maps) of the distribution, relative positions,
elevations of natural and man-made features of a particular landscape, such as, mountains, rivers,
valleys, human settlements, railway lines and roads and also includes local history and culture.
