Day one of college when I saw our curriculum template, and there I saw Life and Works of Rizal

as one of my subjects. Honestly, my reaction was not good like "Again?”. All I thought that taking up this
subject is repetitive since we already tackle it during high school especially El Filibusterismo and Noli Me
Tangere. It might look rude but I have this thought "What is the relevance of Life and Works of Rizal in
my course?". Those thoughts become different until we started our class.

Day 1 of our Class and I realized that what we only discussed in high school is just a little
background of Dr. Jose Rizal and his works. This time we will dig deeper into Rizal's life and works. I
appreciate that R.A 1425 happened and still exists today because up till now, with this law, it will remind
us what Dr. Jose Rizal been through and the state of our country. This law will always remind us of the
significance of patriotism in the country. I must say until our society becomes a dream society of Rizal
we should still pay attention and appreciate R.A. 1425 or simply the Rizal Law.

Through the different characters made by Rizal in his novels, we can compare their
characteristics to the people in our society. Patriotism is one of the characters that every Filipino should
be possessing. Having this kind of character will become a bridge for us to have a better society.
Studying Life and Works of Rizal will become a wake-up call to the youth that our country can still
experience situations like in the novels and be mindful of what is happening in our surroundings. Now,
more intellectuals arise, we can view Rizal’s works as memories of a painful past, but that is dependent
on us, on our plan in pursuance of a better Philippines.
