BRANCHES OF AGRICULTURE

Four main branches of agriculture:


 Livestock Production
 Crop Production
 Agriculture Economics
 Agricultural Engineering

A. Livestock Production – commonly defined as domesticated


animals raised in an agricultural setting to produce labor and
commodities such as meat, eggs, milk, fur, and wool.
 Nomadic pastralism – this is the keeping of cattle while moving
from one region in search of pasture and clean water.
 Poultry farming – the rearing of poultry such as chicken,
goose, turkey, pigeon etc.
 Pig farming – rearing of pigs
 Apiculture – bee keeping
 Aquaculture – fish farming

B. Crop Production – other term is Arable Farming.

 Annual crops – like cereals and pulses garden peas


 Perennial crops – like coffee, tea, sugarcane
 Field crops – like growing of wheat.
 Horticulture crops – entails (i) Pomology, (ii) Olericulture, (iii)
Floriculture

I. Pomology – growing of fruits


II. Olericulture – growing of vegetables
III. Floriculture – growing of flowers
C. Agriculture Economics – is a branch of agriculture which deals
with the utilization of scarce resources. It aims at maximizing
output while minimizing costs. Example is marketing agriculture
produce.

D. Agriculture Engineering – is a branch of agriculture that deals


with use and maintenance of farm tools, machinery and structures.
