INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL MARKETING
I. Meaning
Digital marketing is a broad term that includes all marketing channels and
methods you can use to promote products or services on the Internet but also on
electronic devices such as TVs, mobile phones and electronic billboards.

II. Digital Marketing Channels

1. Website Marketing - A website is the focal point of all digital marketing

campaigns. Your website should represent your brand, product, and
services in the best possible way. It should be fast, mobile-friendly and
easy to use. Once you have a website your next step is to come up with a
digital marketing strategy and promote your website and content with the
purpose of getting more traffic and customers.

2. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - Search engine optimization is the

process of optimizing your website for search engines. The main goal of
SEO is to help a website rank higher in the search results and get organic
traffic from search engines. SEO has a number of sub-processes. The main
ones are:

Technical SEO
On-Page SEO
Off-Page SEO

3. Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Advertising- PPC advertising gives you the ability to

reach internet users on a number of networks through paid ads. You can
set up PPC campaigns on Google, Bing, Linkedin, Twitter, Pinterest or
Facebook and show your ads to people searching for terms related to your
products or services. PPC campaigns can segment users based on their
demographic characteristics (age, gender, etc) or even their particular
interests or location. Every time a user clicks on your ads, you pay a fee
to the provider (and thus the term pay per click).

4. Content Marketing- Content marketing is all about the content. The digital
world is a huge collection of content in different forms like text, images,
audio, and video. The goal of a content marketing campaign is to reach
potential customers through the use of content.Content is usually
published on a website and then promoted through social media, email
marketing, SEO or even PPC campaigns.

5. Email Marketing - Despite the increased use of social media networks,

email marketing is still one of the most effective digital marketing
channels. Email marketing is the medium to get in touch with your
potential customers or the people interested in your brand and this entails
that these people want to hear from you.

6. Social Media Marketing - Social media marketing has to do with reaching

people in the various social networks either through content marketing
campaigns (postings), paid ads or both.

7. Mobile Marketing Mobile marketing is not the same as having a mobile

friendly version of your website. Making your website mobile friendly is
a must and necessary otherwise your website won’t show up for Google
searches performed on mobile. Mobile marketing is about creating an app
and uploading that app to Google Play or other app stores for users to
download.

8. Video Marketing - Video marketing is something relatively new but

recently it has become so popular that you simply cannot ignore it.
YouTube has become the second most popular search engine and a lot of
users are turning to YouTube before they make a buying decision, to learn
something or just to relax. YouTube is just one of the mediums you can
execute Video marketing. There are so many other platforms like
Facebook Videos, Instagram, Vimeo to use to run a video marketing
campaign. The best way to take advantage of video is to integrate them
into your SEO, content marketing and social media marketing campaigns.

KLE Society’s College of Business Administration, Lingaraj College Page 3

9. Billboard Marketing - Billboard marketing is considered to be part of
digital marketing. Electronic billboards are available in a number of
public places (think Times Square billboards or Super Bowl commercials)
and it’s another more traditional channel in your digital marketing
arsenal.

INDUSTRY PROFILE
I. What’s shaping the Digital Ad Market
Despite early warning signs of a global economic slowdown, the possibility of a
recession is not keeping most advertisers up at night. Ad spending will continue to
rise across the globe, with digital driving most of the growth. In 2019, worldwide
digital ad spending will rise by 17.6% to $333.25 billion. That means that, for the
first time, digital will account for roughly half of the global ad market.

In some countries, including the UK, China, Norway and Canada, digital has
already become the dominant ad medium. This year, the US and the Netherlands
will join that group, with digital accounting for 54.2% and 52.6% of total ad spend,
respectively. In Russia, half of total ad investments will go to digital.

Meanwhile, in less-developed countries such as those in Latin America and parts

of Southeast Asia, digital ad investments will continue to lag behind traditional for
the foreseeable future.

Google will remain the largest digital ad seller in the world in 2019, accounting for
31.1% of worldwide ad spending, or $103.73 billion. Facebook will be No. 2, with
$67.37 billion in net ad revenues

The continuing shift toward digital advertising doesn’t mean that traditional
channels will be neglected in 2019. In fact, advertisers across the globe are
beginning to strategize how to effectively leverage both traditional and digital
advertising and more closely mirror how their audiences consume media.

II. Top players in Digital Marketing Industry

o Grey Advertising
o Wieden+Kennedy
o Butler
o Shine
o Stern and Partners
o Ogilvy and Mather
o BBDO
o Crispin Porter + Bogusky
o The Martin Agency

III. Marketing technology trends

Voice is going to continue to rise

o Almost one-third of the 3.5 billion searches performed on Google every day
are voice searches now, with personal assistant devices leading the way.

o Voice search differs from the typical desktop or mobile search. When you
open Google on your browser and type in your search query, you’ll see
hundreds of pages of search results. It’s not that hard to be one of them.

o When you ask Google a question, it will give you just a few results. More
often than not it will only give you one result. If your website is one of them,
the CTR can potentially be much higher. However, it needs to be there in the
first place. Therefore, tailoring your SEO strategy for voice search is crucial.

o Ways you can do this is make your search phrases more conversational and
less like written terms. Often written searches are just keyword bundles.

o Consider what your customers might speak, rather than type when making
an inquiry. It also makes sense to start writing in a more conversational tone
to develop content that better aligns with voice search.

KLE Society’s College of Business Administration, Lingaraj College Page 5

Video is still going to be at the top of the tree

o Video is still winning the race of most successful medium of marketing in

2019 and this is set to continue into 2019. This makes sense, because the
average attention span of consumers is short, and most people would rather
watch a video than read a blog post.

o Live video has been a large factor in marketing because it directly connects
engaged consumers to products and services. If you want to catch consumer
attention then you will most likely find them on social media. Platforms like
Facebook Live have given marketers the opportunity to be in the face of
their target market.

Virtual Reality

o Virtual reality is a completely generated reality through the use of a head-

mounted device. Businesses are already embracing the power of this new
technology in creating brand awareness, as well as in selling individual
products.

o IKEA, for example, has been using VR gaming technology since 2016. With
its shopping app, IKEA VR Experience, its customers’ can try out different
IKEA solutions before buying them.

IV. The Growth of Digital Marketing in India

Internet access is main-stream. It has intensified the use of mobile phones,

computers, and laptops leading to a high change in the growth of digital channels
both in strength and volume. Be it social media, surfing for information on Google
or making purchases, India has transformed this medium into a full-fledged
market. And this market has flourished into creating Digital Marketing as a prime
source of bringing business through the internet!

Digital Marketing is growing at a rate of 25-30% in India annually. And if statistics

are to be believed, India has reached 500 million users of the internet by the end of
2018. India also has the World’s largest Facebook population. The high-speed
digitization, online portals, social media channels, etc lead to a growth of digital
marketing.

On average an Indian spends about 4-5 hours a day scrolling through social media,
emails, and browsers. The growing market of gadgets like smartphones, laptops,
tablets, etc has only increased the pace of usage and penetrated the market to make
it reach to a wider set of audience. The content on the internet influences the lives
of people big time. Display of ideas through images, videos, texts, etc has a sound
foundation into the minds of the people which translates into their living. Digital
marketing is very much about influencing the audience online with mediums of
content to increase a brand’s impact over the audience.

From 69 million online shoppers in 2016 and more than 100 million in 2017, India
has seen a stark rise in the internet population. Ever since the launch of Digital
India in 2015 as an initiative to improve online infrastructure and digital
empowerment, there has been mushrooming of a complete market of start-ups,
services and more than connect people globally! It has resulted in a rise of active
internet users, mobile connections, social media traffic and more.

Digital marketing is a big umbrella under which the technical, as well as non-
technical skills to create a wave of popularity over the internet, is covered. The
industry has created a variety of job roles for individuals to seek employment and
display their talents.

KLE Society’s College of Business Administration, Lingaraj College Page 7

It takes experts from the field of web designing, web development, social media
consultants, brand consultants, content writers, graphic designer, artists, etc to
come together and collectively work towards creating a visual representation of
ideas that is easy to plant into the minds of the audience.

Companies are today shifting towards a more digitally empowered set-up to make
the most of the golden period of digital marketing that India is witnessing. About
70-80% of the population is dedicated to making purchases online, and e-
commerce websites like Flipkart, Amazon, Myntra, etc are making waves with
their influence over the market. And all of it in a country that still has about 2/3rd
of the population with no access to the internet or smartphones. As the access to
the internet over a larger population rises, India is to witness a revolution in terms
of digitalization that will soon make India as one of the top markets in the world
with the highest numbers of internet users.

VII. Departmental Structure – Functional

A functional structure is one of the most common departmental structures.

Under this structure, the organization groups employees according to a
specialized or similar set of roles or tasks.

The major advantage of this type of structure is that people with similar
knowledge and skills are grouped together. This makes it possible for
employees to become specialists in their field. The specialization that
functional structures hone helps to bring about in-depth knowledge and skill
development among the employees, and this can help you achieve your
company's functional goals.

One Zero Eight is structured by functional departments i.e. departments with

clearly defined roles and responsibilities. This division into functional
departments helps with communication as people know who to speak to if a
problem arises. It also helps workers understand their roles and how the
business works, setting out the responsibilities of each person who are
working in the company. The functional areas of department include:

X. Findings about the Organization Structure

Mr. Govind VK who is the manager of One Zero Eight possesses more
responsibility than a manager in a tall organization because there is a greater
number of individual immediately below who are dependent on direction, help, and
support. As One Zero Eight is a startup company comprising of few employees in
the organization, this is a good and attractive approaching hierarchy structure for
the company. He believes that adopting this type of model

Promotes employee involvement through a decentralized decision-making

process.
Comments and feedback reach all personnel involved in decisions more
quickly.
Expected response to customer feedback becomes more rapid.
Providing growth of employees by making them independent and self-
managing

When asked to Akshay Kamble (Working for 6 yrs as a Designer) about the
organization hierarchy followed by One Zero Eight, this is what he said,
“Hierarchies can be repressive, rules can be absurd and bosses can be toxic. One
Zero Eight is a company to provide you the growth by applying your creativity
skills into a particular project. This is what makes a working fun and challenging”

KLE Society’s College of Business Administration, Lingaraj College Page 26

XI. Other Findings

Flextime – Keeping in mind about the work-life balance, One Zero Eight is
adopting a flextime; it is a flexible hour’s schedule that allows workers to alter
workday start and finish times. The company allows the employees to enter the
office between 9:00am to 10:30 and leave the office premises anytime after
6:30pm depending upon the completion of task assigned to them.

Meetings – One Zero Eight highly believes in the concept of Talking in Circles, it
is about communication at a deeper level than many of us are used to. It is about
talking, listening, creating and working with a group of distinct individuals. It is
about how to team-talk, team-think and team-create by enhancing the ability of
each member of that team to connect with one another. The meeting is conducted
every morning to check the progress of work.

XII. Suggestions

Adding up Workforce–During my internship, I had found that there are very less
number of employees working and the load of the work was more. Therefore my
suggestion is to employ more people to their team as this would provide the
employees to work effectively towards a particular project and which would help
them to enhance their creativity level.

CONCLUSION

On the whole, this internship was a useful experience. I have gained new
knowledge, skills and met many new people. I achieved several of my learning
goals. I got insight into professional practice. I learned the different facets of
working within a marketing agency. I experienced that digital marketing is having
a lot of growth because of the wide use of internet.

Related to my study I learned about

Creating a post bank for social media

Creating a business page and posing the images and video regularly on
social media
Checking the performance of website and social media pages with the help
of tools like Google analytics, Google search console and Facebook
analytics
Creating a campaign on Facebook
Basics of Wordpress
Using 000webhost - hosting name of the website, doing a SEO for all the
pages by adding keywords, tile and meta description and adding plugins and
themes to my website.
Doing a SEM by creating a account on Google Adwords
Writing content for the website
Doing a keyword research using tools like Uber Suggest

This helped me to define what skills and knowledge I have to improve in the
coming time. It would also be better if I can present and express myself more
confidently. At last this internship has given me new insights and motivation to
pursue a career in Digital Marketing.
