The child I assessed is in the second grade. The child has had trouble at the
beginning of the year with reading but has progressed very much. The student had
trouble mainly with fluency and understanding the text as they read. I have noticed the
child does not read every word of a passage or sort scims through the text. I
administered three assessments in the child's home in a quiet dining area.I allowed a
day between each assessment to not overwhelm the child. I was nervous this scenery
may affect the child's focus on the reading.I started each assessment by first asking
how they are feeling and what they had learned for the day. I allow the child a few
moments to relax in silence and ask if they would like water or a bathroom break before
reading. The student has told me they participate in a reading group everyday. The child
showed interest in phonemics when taught at school. The child gradually shows
progress in reading but sometimes strains from it.
