Carbol* xylene was a very useful too” in the histopatholo-
gy laboratory some years ayo, primarily duo to ite softening
tifecton tistuo avetions embecdod in colloidin. Sections ob
tained from celloida-embedded specimens had a tendeney to
harden when expoced to xylene, resulting in séetion curling,
‘This often ‘wrinkles und, of course, distortion of tis
sue section. Carbel-rylene was ised extensively during the
celloidln era to poften these sections and allow them to un-
‘curl and lie at against the aide proot tothe coverslip moant-
Ing. The strong emphasis on the use of paraffin over the last
fifteon years ‘has relegated carbal-ryiene to the disuse
‘status. However, this station exn stil be very useful on or.
