To those of us on the Publication Team, however, it seems like another year, another major miracle. Considering the literally thousands of hours of hand work involved in testing, diagramming and layout, we are continually amazed to see the pages add up one by one to become such a large book. Everything you read and see was considered carefully several times by several people, and worked on by several more. We would like to express appreciation to these people, all Friends volunteers, for their abundant and patient effort and substantial sense of humor (prerequisite). Alice is a founding member of our Board. For more than twenty years she edited The Origamian for Lillian Oppenheimer's Origami Center of America, setting an example in the diagramming of models and the communication of origami vocabulary emulated by us, and by folders and societies around the world. Alice Gray's contribution to origami extends beyond the brilliance of her teaching, her creation of the first public origami tree, the respect she has earned from origami leaders worldwide and the sharing of her values. For fifty years the door of her office for the American Museum of Natural History's Department of Entymology was always open. If one was in need, Alice was always there to share. There is a small universe of folders and teachers in all disciplines whose first lesson was with Alice Gray. Alice no longer has the vitality which helped to build the foundation of this international origami movement. Her spirit, however, continues to inspire us. Be well, dear Alice. We love you. As our membership increases, so does our need for teachers, This chapter has been prepared to encourage members to share through teaching. We have brought together the ideas of several experienced teachers - their techniques, phrases, and simple tips may be helpful to our members during an origami class in {heir homes or at the Convention. itis our aim to build confidence in teachers, thus helping them enjoy their teaching experience. The goal of origami teaching is to enable the student to construct a model with pleasure in the execution and Salistaction with the result. Whatever the means of communication, when the pupils are happy with their achievements, the teaching has been successful Before The Class ‘The following tips are offered by teaching members to help you Prepare for an origami class: 1. Listen to your teachers, and try to understand what itis that makes one teacher's instructions clearer than another's, 2. Familiarize yourself with origami vocabulary and try to use these terms when teaching. Always define an origami term the first time you use it. Include shapes as part of the description, such as colored triangles, kite, or roof top. 3. Understand the skill of novice, intermediate, and advanced students. Begin with simple models, and lear to {old the model you are teaching very well. Try to match the model being taught to the students’ level of Competence, with enough difficulty to maintain interest, but not enough to raise frustration. 4. Practice, practice, practice. As you leam to fold the model, also try to predict which moves or folds will be citficult for your students, and have several precise explanations for them. 5. Teach several people the model in advance and leam by their reactions where the instructions need to be improved. it may take three times as long to teach the model as it does to fold it. 6. Make step folds i you feel the need of reassurance during the teaching, 7. Decide on the size and type of paper needed. Your sample should be large enough to be seen from the back ow, but not too large for comfortable manipulation. From a distance, the contrast between the white side and light colors or foil cannot always be distinguished. 8. Diagrams are always a plus. If you can draw diagrams or gain permission for use of diagrams in print, your class will be overjoyed. 8. Prepare suggestions for the type of paper suitable for exhibition models. Make a model for exhibition. {ii During The Class The following tips are offered by teaching members for use during an origami class: 1. Introduce yourself, the model, the model's creator, and any background information on folding this specific model that would be helpful to the students. Place yourself where all the students can see your hands and the sample. I not everyone can see you at once, repeat each step as many times as necessary for each side of the room. Enjoy yourself throughout the class. It you have some jokes or stories to share, use them while you wait for the students to finish a move. This will help to create a pleasant atmosphere. 2. Begin at the beginning unless you are sure that your pupils will all know what you mean if you ask for a specitic base. 3. Try to use origami vocabulary to describe each fold or base. Remember pronouns like “it,” “t words like “over here” are not precise enough to be part of origami vocabulary. “there,” or 4. When describing a fold, use its name, the place where the fold begins and ends, or other “landmarks” to locate it exactly. Make certain that you orient your sample the same way your students are folding - learn to fold the model upside down if necessary. Treat each step as one unit: first identify the present condition and orientation of the model, then perform the step, and confirm the new condition and orientation of the model. Don't continue until you have confirmed that each of your students has performed this step correctly. 5. Encourage the students to observe your demonstration of a move before they attempt it. Demonstrate each move twice. 6. Watch your students carefully, and not just their hands. Look for blank or quizzical expressions and if you sense any hesitation or uncertainty, repeat your instructions in a slightly different (hopetully clearer) way. 7. Be supportive and non-threatening in your instructions and corrections - not everyone learns at the same pace. Give the class as much assurance and positive encouragement as you can 8. Try to ensure that your students are quiet and attentive. A noisy room is not the most comfortable learning environment. 9. Suggest that folders compare their models with their neighbors’ models. 10. Help individual students who have particular difficulty. Avoid folding the student's model for them. If you have to Perform the move on the student's model, unfold the step and let the student try. If the student is still unable to Perform the move, you may need to fold the mode, if that is necessary to enable the student to proceed to a satisfactory end. The student's self-salisfaction is the one great essential. They must succeed. Frustration and failure will alienate them from origami altogether. Do, however, encourage students to avoid models well beyond their present skill levels. 11. Keep aware of the time. liv Rabbit by Edwin Corrie (UK) - ©1988 1. Colored both sides, cela pee 8. Most of today’s folders think he's been around forever, which isn't quite true. The Snail and the Blossom were designed by him in 1968 (the rumor that he was in diapers at the time is false). In 1975 David Pacheco diagrammed the Snail. These diagrams were updated by Bob Stack and Carol Ann Wilk. The Blossom was diagrammed by John in 1968, and updated by Maria Velasquez, Start with stretched bird base color side out. 1a. Reverse fold lower tip in. ‘tb. Open up top layer. 2. The valley folds between the original squares lets each double triangle fold against the next, like an accordian. 5. Sink each peak. Assemby of Tree and Cosmetic Folds The bottom four edges of the base must be spread apart and carefully folded so that it stands firmly and flat. To add the branch section, spread the ‘sink’; their center fts over the tip of the base, each of four sides sliding down into the deep fold of the base. The top of the tree fits over the center with each of four bottom edges sliding into the branch section. The double vertical edges should be widened. 6. Stretch out the five bases. Form a ring (sinks are pushed in) by placing last square and sink behind the first. Refold so there are four sides with sinks betwee 7. This ring forms the middle section of the tree. 227 228 | Model Stand by Mike Thomas (IL) ©1989 | 1. Begin with bird base. Valley fold up front and back flap. 2. Rabbit ear front and back. a. It was first used by the kings to dine upon their most festive of feasts. At that time, there was no pattern on it. Then King Gulagy ordered that his table have as many squares on it as the number of wives he had. At that tme he had sixty-five wives and his table maker told him that would not do! So he sent one wile, Esmerlardo, to India. His magnificent patterned table was made. When the wife returned, much the richer, she was so angry that she stole the table. Another table was made and again stolen, But soon Esmerlardo had no more room to store any more tables so she went back to India, carrying all her tables, and sold them for more riches. Now you can be prouder than the king and make your own Gothic Table! © John Montroll 1991 Stage 1: Pre-creasing Fold and unfold. Crease lightly but ‘The possibilities are endless!
