__4__ fox __3__ day __1 or 6__ hero __4__ box __1__ computer

PLEASE NOTE:

There are many exceptions to English spelling rules. These are some that can be shared with students
who are learning spelling rules or for those who need a review.

Exception to #6 “ends in a consonant + “o” rule” There are some words that don’t end with “es”

examples that follow the rule: photo - photos piano - pianos

Some words can be spelled with an “s” or “es”

examples: cargos - cargoes tornados - tornadoes heros - heroes echo - echoes

Exception to #4. If the “ch” ending is pronounced like a “k” sound, you add just an “s” not an “es”

example: stomach - stomachs

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Explanation of words that end in “ss” - If students aren’t sure how to pluralize a word that ends in “ss” explain that there
are never three “s’s” at the end of a word to make it plural. The “es” also adds a syllable to the word.
example: glass (one syllable) glasses (two syllables)
example: waitress (two syllables) waitresses (three syllables)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Note: - Some words like “fish” are the singular and plural. (one fish, two fish) but fishes is also a plural spelling of the
word. Example: Many types of fishes are found in the ocean.
Students may not realize that the word fishes is also a verb. The man fishes in a local pond.

The word “bread” is also singular and plural. “Breads” is also a plural form. Cheese or cheeses are both plural.

The word “chimney” follows #9 because “Y” is considered a vowel because it has the long “e” sound. If it was
considered a consonant, the Y would sound like the Y in the word “yes”.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Exception to #5, if a noun ends in two vowels and an “F”. Just add an “s”.
example: chief chiefs It wouldn’t be spelled chieves.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

If there are any questions about how a word is spelled, students can refer to a dictionary if they’re not certain which
rule applies to it. Words that end in “o” + “s” or “es” are usually questionable.

and have each student add singular and plural nouns to the picture of the dog holding the noun chart. Display.

Page 2 - Use as a cover for a noun packet of the rules and activities. Share at parent conferences or send the packet
home at the end of the year.

rule applies to it. Words that end in “o” + “s” or “es” are usually questionable.

Please note: There are online dictionaries that are more accurate than others.
Merriam - Webster provides accurate spellings and an audio button, so students hear how words are pronounced.
