FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 15, 2020

BRANCH PRESIDENT CALLS FOR THE RESIGNATION OF PENDER COUNTY SCHOOLS

SUPERINTENDENT DR. STEVEN HILL

The Pender County Branch NAACP demands the immediate resignation of the Pender County
Schools Superintendent Dr. Steven Hill. The reasons are as follows:

● A lack of urgency in responding to evidence that white teachers openly used racial slurs.
● The abusive use of attorneys in covering up child sexual misconduct occurring within the
schools.
● A lack of urgency in responding and bringing closure to several allegations of misconduct
occurring within the system.
● A culture of intimidation and fear by administrators speaking out against racism in the
district.
● Wasteful spending and suspicious contracting with attorneys totaling millions of dollars
over just a few years.

The Pender County NAACP will continue its support of a protest scheduled at the Pender
County School Board meeting on Tuesday, June 16, 2020 at 5:30pm. The location will be Topsail
High School, 245 N. St. John Church Rd., Hampstead, NC. We are in hopes that the Pender
County Board of Education members will support this demand and spare our community the
trauma derived from a long and intense fight of making our schools safe for all students.
