Vincent van gogh:

Self portrait with bandaged ear
In this painting by vincent van gogh, It shows him with a bandage running down the right of his
face to the chin. At the time of painting the portrait, Vincent was undergoing severe mental illness,
psychotic episodes and delusions.

In the painting, the painter uses

matching colours for the person and the
back ground, for example- The purple cap
matches the window frame, the Green
coat matches the painting in the
background, the bandage matches the
white canvas and the yellow hue of the
skin matches the colour of the wall.

The commonly accepted story behind

the cause of the of Vincent Van Gogh
cutting his ear off is that Vincent chased
Gauguin with a knife and later cut off his
own ear, giving it to a prostitute later on.
However recent research has shown that
Gauguin himself may chased vincent with
an epee and cut his ear off after an
argument. Later on, van gogh was thought
to keep quiet about it in order to protect
his friend and to hide the evidence, he
handed the ear to a prostitute and also
threw the epee into a river.
Willem de Kooning :
Self-Portrait with Imaginary Brother

If a painted igure is distorted or defaced

rather than being whole and intact, it means
exactly the same thing as if a glass has been
shattered or a body lies broken by the
roadside or on a battle ield. Life, and one's
sense of it, has been wounded or fragmented:
something has been rendered useless or
destroyed.

The explosive nature of de Kooning's work

tells us that it is an art of struggle, that its
source is both painful and personal, obviously
based on feeling over intellect and very
probably stemming from some "primal event"
(as Freud might term it) in his early life, or
series of events, so traumatizing that the artist
was forced to thrust them into his
unconscious, and has spent a lifetime trying to
keep a lid on them, only to have the
unconscious contents violently erupt countless
times in his paintings
Frida Kahlo:
The two Fridas

This is a self portrait done by the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. She is an artist famous for self
portraits. She was born on July 6th 1907 and she died at July 13th 1954. This painting was
originated from Frida’s imaginary childhood friend.

Later, Kahlo stated that it actually explains her emotions she felt of her divorce between her
husband, Diego Rivera. The Frida on the right is wearing a tehuana, a traditional mexican dress. This
Frida was loved by Diego. The Frida on the left is wearing a white Victorian dress. This Frida was the
one which Diego abandoned.

The hearts of the two Fridas are exposed, and this explains the pain Frida felt. The heart of the
unloved Frida is broken, while the other Frida’s heart is unharmed.

The amulet held by the Frida on the left is holding a vein which travels through both hearts of the
two Fridas. This vein reaches its end on the unloved Frida’s lap.The unloved Frida is trying to stop
the blood, the blood from Diego, because her bleeding means she is in danger of death. The loved
Frida is the only companion of the unloved Frida. This is why they are holding hands. The stormy
sky in the background also explains part of Frida’s dark emotions.
Tristan Tzara:Infinity house
Tristan Tzara was a French and Romanian poet, essayist, journalist, playwright, performance artist,
composer, ilm director, politician, and a diplomat born in April 16 1896. He died at December
25,1963.

This drawing, is a self portrait of Tristan Tzara done in 1928. If we look at the details of the drawing,
we can see that each part of the head has numbers and that there are people inside each part doing
something. Some believe that those are the characteristics of Tristan Tzara’s personality. The house
from the name of this drawing could mean the brain of Tristan Tzara, and in inity could mean the
different characteristics of his personality. Some people think differently from the idea explained
previously. Some believe that it describes his life, some believe that those parts of the brain just
mean his thoughts on everything. Some believe that there is no meaning to it at all.
