 Whig is genetic engineering?

The term genetic engineering refers to various techniques used for the artificial
manipulation, modification and recombination of DNA or other nucleic acid
molecules to modify an organism or population of organisms.

 Do you think genetic engineering is a good thing?

It is a good thing if used correctly as it provides many benefits, thanks to genetic
engineering, scientists can make certain combinations between genes of different
species, in order to solve problems and improve the economic-commercial
performance of farms. You can look for cures to genetic diseases so that the new
generations are born healthier or that plants with greater tolerance to drought or
protected against viruses are grown.

 What are people worried about who oppose genetic

engineering?
They are concerned about the consequences that may result since being treated
negatively could cause great harm to humanity in addition to religious arguments,
there are a number of ethical objections. For example diseases, after all, exist for a
reason and have persisted throughout history for a reason. Although we should
fight them, we need at least some diseases, otherwise we would soon be
overcrowded. In fact, living longer is already causing social problems in today's
world, so artificially extending everyone's time on Earth could cause even more
problems later, problems we cannot predict. The same goes for plates and
everything that is genetically manipulated.

 Do you worry about eating GM (genetically modified) food?

If I am concerned, because although they are created for a benefit, not all people
are suitable to consume genetically modified foods and can generate reactions that
harm the health of the population, since everything is better when the food
consumed is natural.

 Do you think genetically modified food could harm the

ecosystems of the areas in which they grow?
If they can harm the area where the GMOs grow, since globally it has been verified
that:
- GMOs multiply the use of herbicides and other pesticides, with the consequences
this implies for the environment and human health.
- They promote a highly industrialized agriculture model that is expanding the
agricultural frontier in natural areas of Latin America.
- Many farmers in the USA. USA And Argentina has serious weed control
problems, as weeds are becoming resistant to herbicides associated with GM
crops.
- Some transgenic crops transfer the introduced genes to related wild plants,
transmitting this genetic modification, which seriously affects biodiversity and
poses unpredictable consequences of these new beings released into the
environment.

 What do you know / think about the Oncomouse – the

mouse specially modified to help in cancer research?
It is a mouse that was genetically modified so that it suffers from cancer and
develops rapidly, although it was created with the aim of advancing research to find
a cure for this disease, if we think about the suffering that we would generate for
these animals, we entered into great controversy.

 Do you think it’s essential to modify genes to create new

medicines?
I do not think it is essential, but nevertheless I believe that it can speed up the
process to generate new medicines that help fight diseases more effectively.

 Scientists can genetically engineer fruit to contain vaccines

at a very low cost – Is this a good idea?
It is a good idea because by lowering the price of vaccines it is easier to have
access to them and so we could avoid many diseases or how it is currently
happening to avoid a pandemic.

 What do you think about cloning?

I think it is a great tool since gene cloning is used to obtain in great quantity a
specific gene that can be used to produce a new vaccine, a new medicine or even
improve the quality of the food they consume on a daily basis. But it also has a
very negative side since it alters nature and when it is not used responsibly,
damage can be generated.

 Would you like to see a cloned version of yourself?

I honestly would not like it, I think it would be something unnecessary.
 What do you know about genes?

Genes are transmitted from parents to offspring and contain the information
necessary to determine their characteristics. They are the units of storage for
genetic information, DNA segments that contain information on how the body's
cells should have.

 Do you think genetic engineering is playing God and that

we should leave life as it was created?
I think that is what most people who practice a religion think, however this is not
the case although we alter nature we have to adapt to the new changes that
currently exist and that includes genetic engineering that was created with the aim
of attending a need.

 What do you think of the idea of genetically engineering

new bodily organs to replace yours when you are old?
I think that it would not be something viable after all, aging is part of living and if we
obstruct this process we will create an over population if it is carried out with all the
people

 What do you think would happen if a GM crop or animal

started causing major harm to the environment / us?
The practice would definitely be prohibited since by causing great damage no one
would endorse its use.

 Genetic engineering might allow parents to ‘design’ their

children before their birth – What do you think of this?
If genetic engineering can currently design children, I think it is a vain practice,
since they make children come out with the characteristics that parents want,
although they can also make children healthier, I think it is an unnecessary
practice.

 Should genetic engineering go ahead to eliminate human

flaws, such as violence, jealousy, hate, etc?
I think that despite being a proposal that wants something positive, we would affect
the feelings that make us human and that although they are negative, it is what
they make us feel and be ourselves.

 What if scientists create a monster human?

I think that it could generate panic and destruction, since being a monster there
would be no control over it and this would generate great complications in addition
to that on the part of the scientists it would be a great lack of ethics.

 What do you understand by the term ‘genetic aristocracy’?

Well, since the aristocracy understands as something to which only superior or
highly powerful people have privilege, I can imagine that it is like some kind of
genes that are much superior to others that have better characteristics.

 If someone’s genes are changed a lot, are they the same

person?
They are not the same person, unless it is cloned even up to now it will not be
possible to achieve an exact cloning.

 Does the government have the right to limit how far we

modify ourselves?
If it does, because if there is no control over what is possible, oh no, genetic
modification can be harmful to humanity if used incorrectly.
