Suez Canal University Enhanced Oil Recovery

Faculty of Pet. and Min. Eng. Sheet 3

capillary Number
Example1: Pages 79.
The residual oil saturation of strongly water-wet sandstone core was determined as 0.258 in a
routine laboratory waterflooding. Initial oil saturation was 0.68. The core was waterflood at
constant pressure drop. At the end of the waterflooding , the injection rate was 0.0069 cu in/min
[0.113 cu cm/s]. Porosity of the core was 0.187 and the diameter was 1.106 in[2.81 cm].IFT
between oil and water was 53 dyne/cm[53 mN/m] and the viscosity of the oil was 6 cp.[6 mpa.s].
What is the probability that the residual oil saturation is representative of the value expected in a
field flood?

Example2: Pages 80.

High molecular weight polymers in dilute concentration can increase the viscosity of water
significantly. For example, a few hundred ppm of certain polymers will raise the viscosity of the
polymer from 1 to 100 cp [1 to 100 pa.s]. You are required to investigate the possibility of
installing polymer flood in a strongly water wet reservoir. What would the effect of a polymer
flood on the residual oil saturation if:
I. The polymer was injected at the beginning of the waterflood , or
II. The polymer was injected at the end of the waterflood.
The average interstitial velocity(don’t use Soi-Sor) in the reservoir is estimated to be 2 ft/D
[7.06 um/s]
Properties of the reservoir rock and fluids are given below:
Porosity = 0.25 IFT = 15 dyne/cm viscosity of oil = 6 cp Permeability = 50 md
