Title: Organization of the Church of Jesus Christ/The Name of the Church
*Note the name of the Church came after it was organized.
Scriptures: Doctrine and Covenants 20:1-2; 21:1-5; 115:4
Easy Reader: Chapter 9 (organization); Chapter 43 (name)
Principle: I can call the Church by the correct name.
Introduction - happens prior to Lesson: Throughout the day purposely call
your children by the wrong name. Select a name for each child and call
them that name all day. Continue calling your children the wrong names
until the object lesson. You could call the children by their initials.
Example: Mary Jane Smith- Call them MJS
Lesson: Begin by reading chapter 9 in the children’s reader. Explain that
this is when the Church was formally organized. Watch the video “Joseph
Smith: The Organization of the Church “ (1:36).
Explain that our Church was organized on the same organization that
existed when Christ was on the earth. Use the Church Organized Puzzle to
review the Organization of the church. Discuss how the organization is the
same today and President Nelson is our prophet. Explain one of the things
President Nelson has asked us to do is use the correct name. Read D&C
115:4.
Object Lesson: Ask children how they felt today as you did not call them
by their real name. How did it make them feel? Did it frustrate them? Did
they know you were talking to them? Relate their feelings to not calling
the church by the correct name. Watch excerpts from President Nelson’s
conference talk. (3:51)
Challenge all to use the full name of the church. Make the I belong to the
Church of Jesus Christ head bands to show their commitment.
Activity: Color the 6th Article of Faith Coloring Page.
Pioneer Activity: Hop Scotch: This game could be made by drawing boxes
in the dirt with a stick and throwing a rock. With such little supplies, it made
a great game for pioneer children. To make your own indoor hopscotch, get
10 different pieces of paper. I like to use colored to make it more fun. Tape it
together following the patter and write numbers. Use a bean bag to throw on
paper. Only one foot can be in a square at a time. If a bean bag is on that
square you cannot step in the box. There are several variations of this game.

Activity: Play a game of Simon Say. Explain that if we are counseled to do

something, we should do it. Just like as Simon says we do it, if the Lord
Says, we do it.

Hymn Sing Along: Since Emma compiled the Hymn book, allow each
person to select their favorite Hymn or Children’s Hymn, and sing them
together. Before doing this read D&C 25:12.

Pioneer Activity: Gunny Sacks were often used to store food. When empty
they made the perfect toy. Children would stand inside the bag, and race
hoping the sack along the path. To have your own sack race, let each child
stand in a sleeping bag or pillow case depending on their height. Mark a
starting line and a finishing line. Let children hop the distance across, and
race to the finish line.

Title: Persecution Doesn’t Stop the Lord’s Work.
Scripture Verses: D& C 76, 77, 113 (All came during persecution)
Easy Reader: Chapter 27
Principle: Trials help us reach our potential.
Introduction: Give each child a rubber band. Have them stretch the
rubber band as far as they can. Explain that when they pull on the
rubber band, they are helping it meet its full potential. Tonight we
are talking about what stretches us to reach our full potential.
Read: Read the Children’s reader chapter 27. This chapter goes over
several trials and ways Joseph was persecuted. Although hard
things were happening, the Lord’s work progressed and several
revelations were given. For older children read the revelations that
came during the persecution.
Object Lesson: Start by allowing children to try and make a piece of
paper fly. The paper will not go very far. Next take a piece of paper
and begin folding it into a paper airplane. Every time you fold the
paper explain that the fold represents a trial or persecution. Just
like Joseph had to endure trials to reach His potential, we have to
endure trials to reach our potential. Once the paper airplane is
folded, make it fly across the room. Explain that the paper
represents us. We cannot fly very well without our trials. (Like the
paper unfolded.) Our Trials are for our good.

Pioneer Activity: Jump Rope has been around for a very long time.
Since all the supplies you need are a rope this made great
entertainment. Children would often sing chants or rhymes just like
children do today. Tonight’s pioneer activity is jumping rope.

Title: Zion’s Camp
Scripture Verses: D&C 103:22,30-36, 105:1-6, 9-13,
Easy Reader: Chapter 36
Principe: I will show obedience by doing what the Lord asks.
Introduction: Figure out what city is about 35 miles away. Ask your
children what they think it would be like to go on a camping trip where
they got to walk 35 miles a day for several weeks. Most answers will not be
positive. Change the question. Ask what if the Lord commanded you to do
it. Would you be obedient? Explain that this is a question the early saints
had to face.
Read: Read the selected verses about Zions camp, or read from the
Children’s Reader.
Object Lesson: Have all of the ingredients to your family’s favorite
cookies out with the recipe. Ask one child to read you the recipe. As they
read the steps to the recipe, be sure to not follow the steps. Put in too
much flour, not enough sugar, etc. The children will tell you the cookies
won’t turnout. Ask them why. They should respond with something along
the lines of, ”You aren’t following the recipe.” Rephrase what they said
and state, “You mean I am not obeying the recipe?” Go on to explain that
we must be obedient to the will of the Lord. Just like cookies will be
sweeter if we follow the recipe, our lives will be sweeter if we obey the
Lord.
Relate this to how the Men of Zion’s Camp obeyed the Lord by being a
part of Zions Camp, but also how they had to obey the will of the Lord
during Zions Camp too (Humble themselves, repent, not fight, patience,
etc.) The men of Zions camp learned obedience to the will of the Lord.
Activity: Now be obedient to the recipe and make the cookies. Every time
you put an ingredient in, give one example of ways we can show obedience
to the Lord. While they are cooking, watch the video depicting Zions
Camp.(18:43)You
Younger Children could color during the video.
Pioneer Activity: Hid the Thimble. Hiding small objects was popular
game. Find a thimble or a small object. Take turns hiding it around the
room. Send one person out of the room, and let the rest of the family hide
it. Let the person back in, and let them search till they have found the
object. For younger children you could play Hot or Cold to help them find
the object.
