The commodification of sports

To begin with, sports weren't always an economic activity; with the rise of technology, they have
changed drastically. People aren't participating in sports because they enjoy them, as it has
become a consumer commodity by the media. Commodification has turned this activity into
consumer goods.

We can see that sports have become a fruitful economic activity when we hear how much the
players earn, how present the advertisement is at sporting events and how much companies pay
to appear in the stadiums or on the uniforms; for example, The Super Bowl, where additional
time-up has been added to allow for more commercials. Another thing that contributes to this
activity is the people that pay for tickets to watch these events live. We can't forget the amount of
money that goes to men's teams as opposed to women's teams, which usually receive less than
half of the sponsorships and their salaries are lower. The sporting activity has been turned into a
profession where one can make a living out of it.
