Horeb Elementary- 1% Grade Jefferson County Schools Unit Vocabulary for each unit, based on National Geographic Reach for Reading Program The following PowerPoints are for each unit of the National Geographic’s Reach for Reading series for first grade. These PowerPoints are a presentation tool for words in each unit of the reading series. The large black letters on white are engaging and will help you introduce words as you begin each unit and revisit the words. The high frequency words are simple, large and limited to one per slide. The academic vocabulary has the word, pictures from National Geographic, and a simple sentence. These slides are animated and will appear as you click through the presentation. There are Units 1-8 with each week having a new set of slides. Permission was granted by National Geographic Reach for Reading to use images to create this project. Horeb Elementary- 1” Grade Working with Words based on National Geographic Reach for Reading Program The following resources are for each unit of the National Geographic's Reach for Reading series for first grade. These resources may be used in a myriad of ways to assist teachers in better meeting the needs of each student. These word lists represent two types of words, high frequency words and academic vocabulary as well as words based on phonetic patterns. Optional uses of these sheets could include the following: © Working with Words resource for word exploration (this is my main use for it in my classroom) + Parent involvement in attaining new words (can be sent home) Easy to go resource for introduction of words, especially phon ic patterns |lam sure there are many other helpful uses which could be a helpful component to your own teaching styles. | wll attempt to show you how | have found them useful as a twenty-five minute working with words center. This is a research based approach to exploring words and phonetic patterns. This, provides independent practice for students to complete a rotation while | am working with a guided reading group. Other students would be independently reading or writing while | am working guided reading group. One of the first things I do at the end of each Friday is switch out my words for the next week of study. 1 make approximately 6 copies (color preferable}. | then load them in a smart pal type pocket with the academic words on one side and the phonetic on the other. Notice the pictures are there to help readers who need more support. The pictures are the first word or are related to the first word. Ihave Working with Words tools that | have introduced one by one from the beginning of the year. AS you may know the secret to anything with independent work is to practice together as a group, setting expectations and students modeling appropriate behavior. The importance of training students how to do each activity is imperative. | usually introduce one at a time during the first weeks of school. You may add and take away activities to keep them inspired. Here is a picture of how I have mine set up. Its ‘a good idea to have one of your “organizers” help keep it straightened, as well as having them notify you when you are getting low on consumables. Its important developmentally for 6 and 7 year olds to have chances to make choices when learning. Because of this, | provide many materials for students to use to explore with these words and acquire new information about how words work. This list is not exhaustive, and you are encouraged to find new and creative ways to help keep students engaged and excited about learning, Here is a list to get you started: ‘* Dryerase boards, markers and erasers ‘© Small, decorative note pads and colored pens ‘+ Alphabet stamps, stamp pads and paper ‘+ Metal cookie trays and magnetic letters * Letters to use for building and a sheet © Tic-Tac-Toe sheets ‘+ Rainbow writing - on own or with dice © Read It, Write It, Spell It ‘© Wikki sticks or pipe cleaners © Mini “doodles” ‘* For special days- shaving cream and play dough. | have a can of play dough for each student with theirname. We spread out the dough and poke the letters in with tiny sticks for speed. Let your imagination soar!!!! The following will be some the free recording sheets our class uses.
