Literacy Profile: Interest Inventory Analysis

An interest inventory was administered to Kaliyah E. on January 28th, 2019. Kaliyah just

turned 9 years old in the beginning of January. She is in the third grade at Volney Rogers

Elementary School in Mrs. Bowers class. The informational form that was administered is called

the Witty Interest Inventory created by Paul Witty and David Kopel. Kaliyah appeared to be

excited to complete the interest inventory and she provided very thorough answers.

Kaliyah has one brother and four sisters. It seems that she likes being called “Liyah

Liyah” as a nickname by her family. It appears that her sister reads to her at home. She plays

with her brother and one of her sisters at home. She stated, “I like playing alone sometimes, but

also at times I like playing with others.” She indicated that she wishes she could play more. It

seems that Kaliyah spends her free time watching videos on YouTube and playing online games,

such as, Roblox and Minecraft. It appears that she watches an account called Funneh on

YouTube. It also seems that she has a new baby sister, so her parents help her with homework

when they are able to. It seems that her parents encourage her to read at home. She said that she

has recently read a book about a dragon and a book called Keeping a Secret. It seems that an

average day for Kaliyah involves school, eating dinner, showering, watching TV, and doing

homework.

It seems that Kaliyah’s favorite subject in school is math, while reading is a subject that

she dislikes. She stated that she does not always enjoy reading, though, it appears that Kaliyah

enjoys reading comics in the newspaper, novels, books about science, and books about fairytales.
She is very interested in science, as she explained that she has been reading books about geysers.

She explained that she wants to be a singer when she grows up. She also hopes to be wealthy and

own a Lamborghini. It appears that Kaliyah feels indifferent about school. When asked if she

likes school, her response was “here and there, it depends on if we are doing something fun that

day.” It seems that she enjoys playing soccer and singing in her free time. It appears that Kaliyah

has been to a farm, a circus, a picnic, an amusement park, and a zoo. She has most likely taken a

trip by boat, bus, car, and bicycle. It appears that she wants to be a singer when she grows up.

The Witty Interest Inventory is a wonderful informational form to find out a little more

about students, as well as, their interest in readings materials. It helps teachers understand

students home life, interests, hobbies, aspirations, and reading habits. It is a pleasant way to find

out this information in a relaxed format. The student feels like their teachers cares to know more

about them, which is a great opportunity to earn rapport with students. Witty and Kopel created a

great informational form to gather a students’ interests.
