Supervision Duties (Ethics)

11-11-18

I have supervised over 25 volleyball and basketball games while working on my

administrative practicum hours. These supervision opportunities really have me an appreciation

for the educational leaders who supervise each event throughout the school year. There are so

many behind the scenes duties that aren’t written out in the supervision description.

During these games I have had to connect with officials for each contest to make sure

they are set with everything they need for the event. I reassure them where I will be in case, they

need me for any situation dealing with the gym or fans. I have made some great connections

with parents, coaches, janitors, players, families, workers in the concession area, ticket takers,

and community members who attend these events. It is so important to build these relationships

with every single one of them to make our school an amazing place to come and enjoy an extra-

curricular event.

I have cleaned up messes in the hallways, bathrooms, gym, and cafeteria when the janitor

isn’t around. It is important to work as a team to help one another out by keeping our facilities

safe and clean.

I have helped an injured athlete get ice for her knee and I made sure to reassure her

parents we would take care of her. I provided ice, crutches, towels, and water for the injured

player to put them at ease during this scary situation.

I needed to clear up a situation in the student section during a boys’ basketball game

where some JR. High students were messing around in the bleachers with a bottle of pop. I

asked the boys if I could help them out with the issue they were having during the game. They
didn’t think there was an issue, but I explained to them I was worried about the pop in the bottle

spraying all over. They agreed with me and had a seat on the bleachers very quickly, so it didn’t

look like a big deal to others on the other side of the gym. The other side of the gym was full of

parents and community members from our school and the opposing team. After we cleared the

situation in the bleachers, a parent of one of the boys thanked me for helping them make a better

decision. Another community member commented on my quick action by guiding the young

men in the bleachers to see the possible problem issue that could have occurred if it went any

further.

The supervision role at these events is a on the go, go, go! The time flies and you have so

many individuals to make sure are set with what they need to accomplish during the event. I

enjoyed working with high school students while they were running our concessions stand. It is

very important to build those relationship with our young people these days.
