Vegetation index is a measurement indicating level of a phenomenon related to

characteristics of vegetation. Transformation of vegetation index can be interpreted

as a transformation of pixel value of digital image in some channels which produce

image with a new pixel value representing variety of vegetation phenomena related

to density aspect, component of biomass, component of chlorophyll, etc. whitch

emphasizes in sources of the other spectral variation. Satellite images which can be

employed in composing vegetation index are those having red channel (band 3)

and infrared channel (band 4) such as landsat image 8 and ALOS AVNIR-2.
2.7.3 Sub Topic Material
1) Definition of vegetation index

2) Utilization of vegetation index

2.7.4 Students’ Activities
The students analyze and prepare for the satellite image which can be used to

compose vegetation index in the following meeting.

2.7.5 Additional Readings

2.7.1 Sub Topic

Composing vegetation index with NDVI method
2.7.2 Descriptions of Sub Topic
NDVI is a vegetation index which is a combination between ascription and image

reduction techniques. The channels used in the algorithm are the red channel (band

3) and infrared channel (band 4) with formula of band4 – band 3 / band 4 + band 3.

The value produced from this index varies from -1 to +1 in which if it comes to -1,

the vegetation density will be lower. On the other hand, if it comes to +1, the

vegetation density will be higher.

2.7.3 Sub Topic Material

Comparison between NDVI and the other vegetation indexes.

2.7.2 Descriptions of Sub Topic

Ratio Vegetation Index (RVI) is one of the simplest index transformations. The

channels used in this method are red channel (3) and close infrared channel (4). If

RVI value is turned into infrared-space feature facing the red one, it makes a line

indicating gradient level. The biggest RVI value coincides with the vegetation line,

and the smallest value coincides the land line. This transformation is formulated

with (band 4/band 3).

2.7.3 Sub Topic Material

2.7.2 Descriptions of Sub Topic

TSS is suspended materials (diameter > 1 µm) which is restrained in miliospore filter

with pore diameter 0.45 µm. TSS consists of mud, fine sand, and microorganism.

The main TSS causes in water is soil erosion brought to the water. If the

oncentration of TSS is too high, it will obstruct sunlight penetration into the water,

and it disrupts the process of photosynthesis. The channel used to detect TSS

composition is blue channel (band 1) and green channel (band 2)

2.2 Descriptions of the Topic
Coral-reefs mapping employing satellite image of natural resources is an alternative

which can be arranged by looking at the fact that observation of underwater object

can be conducted using image of clear and homogenenour sea water. The

Coral reefs are a group of animals and corals living in the bottom of the water and

lime stone (CaCO3). The animals generally have lime skeleton, including algae

associating to this ecosystem. Satellite image is a source of data which can be used

to know the distribution of coral reefs in a water. By using available channels,

distribution of coral reef in a water can be measured using algorithm combination.

2.7.3 Sub Topic Material
1) Definition and types of coral reef

2) Factors causing the distribution of coral reefs

2.7.4 Students’ Activities
The students prepare for image of landsat 7 in which the recorded area is in coastal

water to be proceeded in order to gain distribution of coral reefs in the following

meeting.
2.7.5 Additional Readings

2.7.1 Sub Topic

Practice processing image of landsat 7 using Lyzenga algorithm.
2.7.2 Descriptions of Sub Topic
Processing image of landsat 7 starts from pre-processing which consists of

geometric correction, radiometric correction, and cropping the object area in order

to make the data focused on the water. Then, after image corrections are done, the

data is proceeded using Lyzenga algorithm which is a combination of information

take from some spectral channels to produce depth-invariant index) from the

material covering the bottom of the water. The input parameter of this algorithm is

the comparison of water attenuation coefficient in some spectral channels. This

algorithm extracts information of material covering the bottom of the water based

on the fact that reflecting signal approaches to linear function from the reflection of

bottom of the water, and it is a exponential function of the depth.
