Q1. Differentiate between terrestrial and aquatic plants.

Terrestrial plants - Aquatic Plants -


Plants that grow on land are called Plants that grow in water are called
terrestrial plants. aquatic plants.
E.g. mango, neem e.t.c E.g. lotus, tape grass e.t.c

Q2. Write the characteristic features of plants that grow on mountains. Give two examples of
such plants.
Trees growing on hilly regions are usually -
a.    Tall, straight and have a cone shape, so that snow can easily slide off their branches.
b.    Flowerless and have cones with seeds inside them.
c.    The leaves of these trees are needle like and have a waxy coating to prevent any damage
from snow.
d.    Examples- pine, deodar

Q3. How do desert plants save water?


A3. To save water desrt plants have the following features –
1.    They do not have any leaves or have very few of them. Photosynthesis is thus carried out by
the green stems.
2.    Most plants have thorns.
3.    They store water in the stems which become fleshy.

Q4. How are mangroves suited to live in swampy areas?


A4. It becomes very difficult for plants to grow in swampy areas, as the air cannot reach the
roots. In order to survive in such swampy areas, plants like mangroves give out breathing
roots which have pores for exchange of gases.

Q7. Write the three types of aquatic plants. Give  examples for each.
A7. The three types of aquatic plants are -
1.    Floating plants- These kind of aquatic plants have light and spongy stem, so that they can
float on water e.g.  duckweed and water hyacinth.
2.    Fixed plants- These kind of aquatic plants have roots fixed to the bottom of the pond. They
have long, thin and hollow stem., broad and flat leaves with an oily coating e.g. Water lily
and lotus.
3.    Underwater plants- These kind of aquatic plants grow underwater and have thin and narrow
leaves, without any stomata e.g tape grass and pondweed.

Q8. Name five useful plants and say how are they important to us.
A8. Coconut - It gives us coconut oil, coconut water and coconut fruit.
Henna - Leaves of henna plant are used for decorating hands.
Acacia - The juice of acacia tree is used to make gum.
Sheesham - Wood of sheesham tree is used to make furniture, doors, windows e.t.c
Tulsi - Leaves of tulsi plant are used to make medicines.
Q9. What are evergreen trees? Where do they grow? Give two examples.
A9. Trees which have leaves that remain green almost all year round are called evergreen
trees.They grow in areas of heavy rainfall. E.g. Rubber, Teak.

Q1. Roots are parts of plant that grow below the ground. Can you think of a place where the
roots grow above the ground?
A1. In marshy areas  the soil is sticky and clayey.In such areas mangrove trees are
found.They have breathing roots that grow above the ground. These roots have pores for
exchange of gases.

Q2. Nina planted tape grass in a pot and watered it regularly. After a few days, the plant died.
Can you tell why?
A2. Tape grass is an underwater plant. It has thin and narrow leaves, without any stomata
.These leaves absorb carbon dioxide and oxygen directly through their surface. These
adaptations allow it to survive only in underwater conditions and not in a pot. So when Nina
planted tape grass in a pot it died even after being watered regularly.
