24, 25. 26. 27. Operation Click the Go icon in the top tool bar then press the trigger on top of the fast acting valve within approximately 2 seconds, Wait until the data has been recorded and processed then choose graphs to display the pressure transients obtained. P1 records the transients at the fast acting valve and P2 records the transients mid way along the pipe. The time delay between these two events can be used to determine the speed of sound in the pipe and is described in the exercise. Note: If the virtual oscilloscope is not automatically enabled or it is required to change the settings associated with the oscilloscope then this can be achieved as follows: Eneble the virtual occloscope by clicking he ascilbscope con ff inthe top toolbar. The setup screen will be displayed showing that the oscilloscope is operating, Demo: =6 SEEM > ieorieae pas = — admamai Sento ome For normal use the default settings will be satisfactory and it will not be necessary to change the settings. If it is required to vary the settings then Unlock the configuration by clicking the unlock icon in the top toolbar. 15 ‘Armfield Instruction Manual After editing the settings click the lock icon. | BADexe | aaa [eke ok cope eer — For further information about setting and using the oscilloscope refer to Operating the Software in the Help menu of the software. 28.When ready to record water hammer, activate the scope configuration by choosing the icon AX inthe top tool bar. The too! bar should show: Be GudDexe settocs | [ 29. Check that the scope configuration is loaded; indicated in the bottom left hand corner of the screen. Sangc ope ative cofigron ioe 30. The oscilloscope is ready to record the pressure changes associated with ‘Water Hammer. 16 Equipment Specifications Overall Dimensions Height - 1.865m Width = 3.875m Depth = 0.725m Environmental Conditions This equipment has been designed for operation in the following environmental conditions. Operation outside of these conditions may result reduced performance, damage to the equipment or hazard to the operator. a. Indoor use; b. Altitude up to 2000m; c. Temperature 5°C to 40°C; d. Maximum relative humidity 80% for temperatures up to 31°C, decreasing linearly to 50% relative humidity at 40°C; e. Mains supply voltage fluctuations up to #10% of the nominal voltage; f. Transient over-voltages typically present on the MAINS supply; Note: The normal level of transient over-voltages is impulse withstand (over- voltage) category Il of IEC 60364-4-443; g. Pollution degree 2. Normally only nonconductive pollution occurs. Temporary conductivity caused by condensation is to be expected Typical of an office or laboratory environment. 7 ‘ Routine Maintenance Responsibility To preserve the life and efficient operation of the equipment it is important that the equipment is properly maintained. Regular maintenance of the equipment is the responsibility of the end user and must be performed by qualified personnel who understand the operation of the equipment. General The equipment should be disconnected from the electrical supply when not in use. Water should be drained from the equipment unless operation is required within approximately one week (actual time will depend on the condition of the water). The water must not be allowed to stagnate, creating a health risk and possible damage to the equipment. The main drain valve is located at the base of the sump tank on the F1-10 Hydraulics Bench. Water can be drained from the C7-MKII-10 into the F1-10 by opening all of the valves in the pipe surge and water hammer systems. A drain cock in the return Pipe at the base of the header tank allows water to be drained from the overflow. RCD Test Test the RCD by pressing the TEST button at least once a month. If the RCD button does not trip when the Test button is pressed then the equipment must not be used and should be checked by a competent electrician. Cleaning the Pipe Surge / Water Hammer Apparatus The exterior of the equipment should be periodically cleaned, using mild detergent if required. Avoid the use of abrasives or solvents as these will damage the equipment. Cleaning the Hydraulics bench The volumetric tank and sump tank of the Hydraulics Bench should be regularly cleaned to remove debris and deposits on the wall. Avoid the use of abrasives or solvents as these will damage the equipment. Calibrating the software to suit the individual pressure sensors The Armfield sofware used with the equipment is pre-calibrated to suit the nominal ranges of the pressure sensors supplied. However, the zero output from the sensors may vary slightly due to manufacturing tolerances. Although not essential to the demonstration, the software can be recalibrated if required to match the actual zero for each of the sensors. Full details about the calibration facility in the software can be found by choosing Help and Software in the top tool bar of the software Calibration can be carried out as follows: Water Hammer Sensors P1 and P2 The nominal range of both sensors is: 0.58 Volts = 0 Bar Gauge (1 Bar Abs) ie. atmospheric pressure 4.5 Volts = 49 Bar Gauge (50 Bar Abs) 18 co lhefisfleflefleflefleflefleflefleflefi fff TfL ttt (Lwiti iif fic Routine Maintenance Note: The software is calibrated in Bar Gauge for both pressure sensors so that sub atmospheric pressures are shown negative i.e. vacuum is displayed as negative pressure. Drain the equipment so that sensors P1 and P2 are subjected to atmospheric pressure only. Load the software for the Water Hammer demonstration then enable the virtual serial COM port and display the mimic diagram. The readings for both sensors should be 0 Bar Gauge. If the readings are within approximately +/- 0.2 Bar Gauge then recalibration will not be necessary. IF recalibration is required then choose Options and Calibrate IFD Channels. In Select Sensor choose P1 or P2 as appropriate. Record the indicated sensor Voltage corresponding to 0 Bar Gauge. Choose Direct to display the calibration values. Calculate the voltage difference between 0.58 Volts and the indicated value (at 0 Bar) then apply this offset to each of the calibration values e.g. if the Indicated voltage at 0 bar is 0.65 Volts then the offset is 0.07 volts and the calibration table should be changed as follows: Voltage Eng Units (BarG) Voltage Eng Units (Bar G) From 05 Volts -1 To 0.57 4 From. 0.58 Volts 0 To 0.65 o From 4.50 49 To 457 49 Enter the required values then choose Plot, OK, then Yes to both questions to save the values. The software will restart with the revised values. Repeat the calibration for both sensors if necessary. Only calibration at atmospheric pressure should be necessary. If recalibration at the top end is required then it will be necessary to remove the sensor from the equipment and connect it to @ suitable source of known pressure e.g. a pressure calibrator or dead weight pressure calibrator. Pipe Surge Sensor P3 The nominal range of the sensor is: 0.5 Volts = Omm (Omm) 4.5 Volts = 1000mm (1.0m) ‘The default calibration to suit operation on the C7-MIKIl is 0.7 Volts = Omm (0.0m) 3.9 Volts = 800mm (0.8m) (compensating for the 50mm difference between P3 and the datum on the scale). Note that the Omm calibration on the scale is located 100mm above the centreline of the test pipe. 19
