English Drama

1. Summarize the plot by writing a one-sentence description for the exposition, the
conflict, the rising action, the climax, the falling action, and the resolution.

The following night, Alison's father, Colonel Redfern, came to pick him up to take him back
to his family's home. This drama allowed the Colonel to appear as quite a sympathetic
character, even though he had nothing to do with the modern world, as he himself admitted.
"You're hurt because everything changes," Alison told him, "and Jimmy's heartache because
everything stays the same." Helena came to say goodbye, intending to leave immediately.
Alison was surprised that Helena remained for another day, but she left, giving Cliff a note
for Jimmy. Cliff in turn handed it to Helena and left, saying, "I hope she raises your nose".

2. Identify the subject of the work.

Alison, happy with Cliff, claimed she was accidentally pregnant and could not ask permission
to tell Jimmy. Cliff won it to tell him. When Jimmy returned, Alison announced that she was
the actress Helena Charles would come to stay, and Jimmy hated Helena more than Alison.
He was very angry.

3. Identify the insight or truth that was learned about the subject.
• How did the protagonist change?
• What lesson did the protagonist learn from the resolution of the conflict?

4. State how the plot presents the primary insight or truth about the subject.

Realisme

5. Write one or more generalized, declarative sentences that state what was learned and
how it was learned.

Cliff shakes his head.

Neither did I really. All this time, I have been married to this woman, this monument to non-
attachment, and
suddenly I discover that there is actually a word that sums her up. Not just an adjective in the
English
language to describe her with—it's her name! Pusillanimous! It sounds like some fleshy
Roman matron, doesn't
it? The Lady Pusillanimous seen here with her husband Sextus, on their way to the Games.
Cliff looks troubled,
and glances uneasily at Alison.
Poor old Sextus! If he were put into a Hollywood film, he's so unimpressive, they'd make
some poor British
actor play the part. He doesn't know it, but those beefcake Christians will make off with his
wife in the wonder of
stereophonic sound before the picture's over.
Alison leans against the board, and closes her eyes.
The Lady Pusillanimous has been promised a brighter easier world than old Sextus can ever
offer her. Hi,
Pusey! What say we get the hell down to the Arena, and maybe feed ourselves to a couple
of lions, huh?
