Smart Materials in Dentistry

Smart materials are materials that are biomimetic in nature and mimic natural tooth substances like enamel or dentine. They support remaining tooth structure and the concept of tissue regeneration, where tissues can be regrown in the oral cavity. Smart materials in dentistry include passive materials like glass ionomer cement, resin-modified glass ionomer cement, and composites. They also include active smart materials like smart composites and smart ceramics. Other applications include shape memory alloys in orthodontics and fluoride-releasing pit and fissure sealants in preventive dentistry.

 SMART MATERIALS

 Termed ‘Smart’ as they are consistent with the newer generation of materials that support
the remaining tooth structure.
 Are ‘Biomimetic’ in nature, ‘mimic’ natural tooth substance such as enamel or dentine
better.
 Concept of tissue regeneration which is the technology wherein the tissues can be
regrown in oral cavity.
 BRAX-I gene thought to be responsible for control on enamel growth has been isolated.
 Even, current developments notably GIC and composite can also be applied to make the
materials ‘smarter’.
 To overcome their deficiencies, the use of CAD/CAM can make designing of cavity
preparation much easier and more adaptable to each tooth, rather than a generalized
approach.

-- Resin Modified GLC

-- Compomer

-- Dental Composites

B. Active smart restorative materials --Smart composites
