Exercise A

We have our meals in the dining-room. We have dinner in the dining-room, or we dine in the
dining-room. After dinner Mr. Smith and his family go into the sitting-room. In the sitting-room
they sit in big chairs. There are big chairs and small tables in the sitting-room. Mrs. Smith makes
the food in the kitchen. At the top of the room is the ceiling. From the ceiling of the room hangs a
lamp. The lamp gives light in the room at night. In the day it is light, but at night is dark. The lamp
gives light in the room when it is dark. We walk on the floor of the room. On the floor of the room
there are chairs and tables. There are two floors in Mr. Smith’s house: on the ground floor are two
large rooms, a dining-room and the sitting-room; on the first floor there are three bedrooms and a
bathroom. Helen and Baby sleep in one room together, and John sleeps in another room alone. We
get up the stairs to get to the first floor. When Mr. Smiths comes home, he hangs his coat and his
hat in the hall.

Each of the children of the school has a pencil. There is a table and a chairs for each of the children
of John’s school. Has every child a pencil? No, not every child has a pencil, but each of the children
in the school has a pencil. Has each of the persons of Mr. Smith’s house a room? No, only John has
his own room. Has Helen her own room? No, Helen and the Baby sleep together. Does John sleeps
alone? Yes, he sleeps alone in his own room.

Does Mrs. Smiths take a cold shower in the morning? No, Mrs. Smith and the children do not take a
cold shower in the morning; they take hot baths in the bath-tub. How do we call very warm water?
We call it hot water. Where do the children wash theirs hands before the meals? They wash their
hands in the bathroom. Are the hands dirty or clean when they come in from their plays in the
garden? Their hands are dirty. What do the children wash their hands with? They wash with soap
and hot water. Can the baby wash herself? No, the baby cannot wash herself, but John and Helen
wash themselves. Does Mr. Smith wash himself? Yes, Mr. Smith washes himself, and Mrs. Smith
also washes herself. What is the kitchen? The kitchen is where Mrs. Smith makes the food.
