Tribute to

Two big ones

On the beginning of this shitty year two big figures of the popular culture left us at a
very advanced age; Christopher Tolkien and Albert Uderzo.

As a tribute about how this two wonderfull figure made and still make my life lighter
and in the case of Mister Tolkien inspired me to write:

In the Case of Uderzo and Gioscinni I think I owe to them my love for the ancient
world:

I think it happened one cold night of winter when I was a kid my father was doing
zapping on the TV of the kitchen when he left out a pleased laugh the movie that was
in the screen turned to be Asterix the Gaul” I decided to watch it with him we laughed
so hard that my mother came to see what happened.

Some years late my aunt brought me to the cinema to see the live action movie
“Asterix and Obelix vs Caesar” and despite I was too afraid of the spider scene I
enjoyed it a lot.

On the school´s library I borrowed the first comics I read of the Gaul´s adventures How
many evenings I spent reading the same comics (yeah the library of a village school is
very limited) and as I read I became more interested on the era that Asterix lived so I
started to read more about the Roman Empire, The Celts, the Egyptians etc specially
their beliefs and I learnt a lot of interesting things.

Some years later when I was on the high school I gladly discovered many new albums
of Asterix in Galician (you will be surprised how popular this characters are around
here) and thanks to the French class I had access to albums in their original language,
so I guess they helped me learning too.

One day on my monthly magazine I received as a gift a CD with demos of different

games one of them was Asterix and Obelix XXL2 and because two players were
allowed I spend evenings with my best friends playing it with my friends.

Over the years both my father and I enjoyed each new album of Asterix even the most
recent that came after the deaths of the Authors, for me the characters are like friends
that are there when things are wrong, I enjoy the subtle critic, the locations and every
travel the duo of Asterix and Obelix do the farther the better, my father just enjoys the
beatings and the funny names of the characters, I still buy every Album that comes out
.
So thank Uderzo and Gioscinny for making my childhood and the life of my father
amazing.

As for Christopher Tolkien I thank him for expanding the world that his father created, I
think it´s unfair that this paragraph would be shorter than the one dedicated to Uderzo
and Gioscini, but how he expanded and corrected the labor of his father is something
worth of admiration, the sons of Hurin, Tales from the dangerous realm, the fall of
Gondolin (Sorry I translated the titles from Spanish) I return to be a kid whenever I
open the map section of the books Imagining how things were on the first age, how
Gondolin could be even more majestic than Minas Tirith, one of my pleasures is that
after reading some description of a place I close the book for some seconds and
imagine how the place would look like, I imagine myself walking on that forest or city,
or if it is a battle trying to visualize that scene, Christopher made a great job with the
legendarium of his father, he managed not only expand it, he also managed to keep
that feeling of magic that Tolkien made me felt the first time I read the books.

So farewell amazing ones Thanks for contributing to my life and inspire me to what I
am today
