The Problem

Background

As much as future nurses are concerned, nurses in the Philippines are

becoming more and more despite the insufficiency of the salary, that is why

some of them are applying abroad. Even though nurses want to go abroad or

outside the country, there are factors that affect their loyalty in the Philippines.

Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all

ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings. It

includes the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and the care of ill,

disabled and dying people (WHO, 2019). Nurses play a big role in our society,

that is why people often choose that job, and health agencies are becoming more

competitive to lure nurses.

Every year nurses are in demand in each hospital even though there are a

lot, since some of them are jumping from one hospital to another. Hospital

executives are challenged to recruit and retain clinical nurses in a time when the

national hospital nurse turnover rates are averaging above 20 percent. This

literature review outlines nursing research that studied characteristics of nurse

managers’ leadership styles that enhance hospital nurse retention.

2

Five consistent themes provided evidence of leadership traits that lead to

job satisfaction and nurse retention (Force, 2005). Based on a 2014 U.S. Bureau

of Labor Statistics report, health care occupations were expected to see the

fastest growth and add the most jobs of any industry in the decade between 2014

and 2024. Registered nursing was predicted to be the top occupation in terms of

job growth. The RN workforce is expected to grow to nearly 3.2 million by 2024, a

16 percent increase over that same 10-year period, according to a January 2016

article in Becker’s Hospital Review (Williamson, 2017). These factors might affect

the physical, mental, and social health.

The researchers aimed to examine the Factors Affecting the Loyalty of
