Coronavirus is continuing its spread across the world, with more than 3,1 million confirmed cases
in 185 countries. At least 217 000 people have died.

The United States alone has more than one million confirmed cases – four times as many as any other
country.

The virus, which causes the respiratory infection COVID-19, was first detected in the city of Wuhan,
China in late 2019. It is spreding rapidly in many countries and the number of deaths is still climbing.

Spain, Italy, France and the UK- the worst- hit European countries- have all recorded more than 20 000
deaths. The outbreak was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on 11
March. This is when an infections disease is passing easily from person to person in many parts of the
world at the same time.

More than three million people are known to have been infected worldwide, but the true figure is
thought to be much higher as many of those with milder symptoms have not been tested and counted.

What is the treatment for the coronavirus disease ? How severe is the coronavirus disease ?

 Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate repiratory
illness and recover without requiring special treatment. Older people, and those with
underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease,
and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness.

Are masks effective against the coronavirus ?

 If you are healthy, you only need to wear a mask if you are taking care of a person with
suspected 2019-nCoV Infection. Wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing . Masks are
effective only when used in combination with frequent hand-cleaning with alcohol- based
hand rub or soap and water.
It is also necessary to introduce strict lockdown restriction. People should self-isolate at home
for at least 7 days if they have mild symptoms

Globally, more than 4.5 Billion people- half for world's population – have been living under social
distancing measures. Those restrictions have had a big impact on the global economy. The world faces
the worst recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

The United Nations World Food Programme has also warned that the pandemic could almost double
the number of people suffering acute hunger
