The autoclaves here described are the CARLO DE GIORGI Co. proposal for the 90ty.
This equipments are extremely simple and versatile for what concern the operation, they are provided
with a front panel where all the commands and signallings for the correct operation are mounted.

:6 3OXV provides 4 programmes (3 for sterilization and 1 for disinfecting) and :6 3OXV 4
sterilization programmes all optimised for the safest and quickest treatment of the different materials used
in the hospital and dental environment.

The equipment consists of: pressure chamber with heating element, door with clamping lever and
portlight gasket, charge tank for the distillate water, gathering tank for the used water, vacuum pump (only
for WS20), water input pump, timer for the sterilization time counting and a series of electrovalves for the
hydraulic operation.
Besides a parallel interface is available for printing out all the cycle data.

All the parts are operated and controlled through a microprocessor to grant the best efficiency in the
different sterilization cycles, in particular, the heating resistance are checked to obtain a constant rise
gradient of the water temperature and to keep the vapour at the right temperature of the selected cycle.

The sterilization cycle can be described in 6 phases:

1. loading of the material to be sterilised, closing of the door and entry of the dose of distilled water in
the chamber (with START command);
2. heating of the chamber, thermodynamic vacuum of the air, subsequent increase of the temperature
and of the vapour pressure up to the value stated in the program chosen;
3. starting of the sterilization, or disinfecting, for the time set (signalled by the timer decrement);
4. discharging of the steam, its condensation and gathering in the suitable tank;
5. vacuum drying (for WS20) or thermal drying (for WS10);
6. pressure levelling at 0,0 bar (room pressure) with the air entry through the bacteriological filter (only
for WS20). Acoustic signalling at the end of the cycle (only at the end of this phase it is possible to
open the door and recovery the load).
The experience acquired during these years has brought some technological solutions to improve the
safety of the sterilizer; they are, above all:

• safety handle to prevent the opening of the door during the sterilization cycle; the door can be opened
only when the inside pressure of the chamber is lower than 0,5 bar;
• safety valve for the steam discharge in case of breakdown of the controls and over pressure >2,6 bar
(mod. TÜV)
• automatic timer restart in case of a pressure drop during the sterilization phase; this will grant a
perfect sterilization also in case of accidental anomaly.
• safety thermostat;
• separation of the used water from the distilled one;
• air cleaning electronically controlled;
• vacuum drying, as foreseen in the hospital field

7+($872&/$9(67(5,/,=$7,2135,1&,3/(

The experience acquired over the years has shown that all the various sterilization methods available are
reliable, however the safest and most efficient method for achieving complete asepsis is undoubtedly
autoclave method, either with dry alcoholic vapour or with saturated steam. The progress made by the
autoclave manufacturer has placed this equipment as the first of sterilization apparatuses, that may be
widely used in all hospital departments and surgeries.

The operating principle of the autoclave is governed by the Boyle’s law which correlates pressure,
temperature and volume. There is a main difference between the chemical autoclave and the distilled
water autoclave as far as the ways in which the micro-organisms are eliminated are concerned. In fact,
although the principle is similar, the factors which lead to the asepsis are different.

In distilled water autoclaves, the sterilization function is based only on the perfect distribution of heat,
thank to the action of the saturated steam which transfers its heat to the material. Indeed, all the material,
whether solid or liquid, has to be treated at the required temperature and for a sufficient time. The
pressure in itself doesn’t contribute in any way to the lethal process, but serves solely the steam to reach
high temperatures.

Whenever the steam comes into contact with any colder material or substance, it yields its quantity of
heat, by condensing and thus increasing the temperature of the object. This action continues until a
thermal balance is reached, after which no further condensation and heat exchange occurs. Whatever the
nature of the material may be (liquid or solid) the sterilization takes place in a aqueous fluid. This leads to
the following considerations: firstly, the overheated steam must be avoided, and secondly, all the air must
be removed.

The overheated steam (steam heated above its normal temperature in relation to its pressure) must be
avoided because, although condensation takes place during the initial stages of heating and in the usual
way, it then evaporates and the sterilization process becomes a dry heat process, for which the conditions
are completely different and the sterilization temperature is very much higher. The air must be completely
removed, otherwise it gathers in pockets or layers thus preventing the penetration of the steam and the
efficient heat exchange.

With the steam, the heating process isn’t instantaneous in any case, and the time needed to reach the
balance at the required temperature varies according to the sizes of the autoclave, the load quantity and
the steam penetration speed.

With liquids and materials, such as surgical medications and glassware in which the penetration is difficult
or the thermal capacity is high, the time factor is very important, and due account should be taken in the
treatment programme. The sterilization time may be extremely short compared to the heating period. Both
the European and American Scientific Community have established and defined three temperatures,
115°C, 121°C and 134°C, and relative exposures by which to manage the various materials according to
their heat resistance. It has also verified the effectiveness of the treatment at 105°C with an appropriate
exposure that can be used to disinfect the more thermally unstable materials having no contact with the
patients.

With distilled water, the most commonly used sterilization programmes are: 134°C/4 minutes for
miscellaneous loads and 12 minutes for porous loads; 121°C/15 minutes for miscellaneous loads and 30
minutes for porous loads; 115°C/30 minutes for miscellaneous loads and 45 minutes for porous loads.
The programmes at the lower temperatures are clearly the only ones that guarantee a high safety margin
for the thermally unstable materials.

About the disinfecting, it is generally used the cycle of 105°C/20 minutes for miscellaneous loads, and of
30/40 minutes for porous loads.

:63OXV
:63OXV '(6&5,37,21

7+(7+(502'<1$0,&9$&880

As soon as the program starts, in the sterilization chamber a dose

of distilled water is loaded which, coming in contact with the walls
already heated, vaporises and pushes the air, being heavier than
the steam, down to the bottom of the chamber (see picture).
Thanks to a special system, the air flows outside the chamber till
the almost total elimination (more than 80%, corresponding to a AIR
vacuum of -0,8 bar, which can be considered an excellent value).
The time length for the air cleaning has not a fixed value, but it
simply depends on the quantity of material in the chamber; more
are the cold objects inside the chamber absorbing the steam and
slower is the emptying period.

The inspection consist of standard maintenance that can be done directly by the operator, and of
preventive and/or corrective interventions that can be carried out only by the Technical Service.
As all the electric appliances, this unit needs not only a correct use but also the maintenance and
inspections at regular intervals. This care will grant a continuous and efficient operation of the autoclave.
To prevent any risk for the operator, it is necessary a regular inspections and maintenance of the
autoclave by the engineers of the Technical Service.

Clean the gasket and the portlight with a cloth dampened with water or vinegar to
eliminate the calcareous residues. To clean the mirror surface of the portlight use a
non-abrasive cloth dampened with a detergent for inox.

:DUQLQJ: Do not let the calcareous or dirty residuals to accumulate on the gasket, because they
can cause its damaging or breakage.

&OHDQLQJDQGGLVLQIHFWLQJWKHRXWHUVXUIDFHV
For a good maintenance of the autoclave, periodically you have to carry out the
cleaning of all the outer surfaces using a cloth dampened with neutral detergents or
simply with water.
For the desultory disinfecting of the outer surfaces, you can use either denatured
alcohol or detergents with a minimum percentage of sodium hypochlorite (or similar).
:DUQLQJ: Do not wash the autoclave with direct or high pressure water jets, as possible
infiltration in the electrical circuits could compromise the regular operation of the
apparatus and of the security circuits.

&OHDQLQJWKHVWHULOL]DWLRQFKDPEHUWKHKROGHUDQGWKHWUD\V
Clean accurately (every week) the sterilization chamber, the holder, and the trays with
a non-abrasive cloth dampened with water or with a standard detergent for inox or
aluminium. Then rinse with alcohol, and at the end with water.

:DUQLQJ: Never use disinfectant products to clean the chamber.

,PSRUWDQW: Clean the overall diameter of the chamber, as residuals in the top could compromise
the regular operation of the electrovalves

Due to the mechanical tear and wear of the gasket, the closing mechanism of the autoclave needs a
desultory adjustment especially when it doesn't allow the pressure rising to the stated value of the
selected programme.

Proceed as follows:

1. Always operate with the autoclave switched off and

hot.
2. Remove the closing cap placed under the door
handle.
3. Use the supplied wrench to loosen (counter-
clockwise) the screw () of the pin.
4. Use the tray removal tongs and turn clockwise the
pin () for 1/8 turn.
5. Verify that the door closing takes place correctly.
6. Tighten the pin with the wrench and place the cap. 1
7. Carry out a test programme to verify the
adjustment has been effective.
2

,PSRUWDQW: To avoid an excessive force to the closing system, which could cause the
unsuccessful opening of the door at the end of the cycle due to the slipping of the
safety friction, it is better to try the adjustment many times, increasing step by step the
tightening of the adjustable screw.
