NEWS RELEASE

Tuesday, June 23, 2020

In a conference call yesterday, a well-known medical person stressed three key COVID prevention practices:

Hand Sanitizing
Masking
Social Distancing

Each of us can do these things personally for our own safety and that of others.

Masking is not an unusual practice. We all expect it in surgery. Another local physician said he masked to protect his patient –
much as what we are asking.

Retailers are key in the sanitizing of the facility both actively and with sanitizer for customers. Masking by employees sets the
stage for customers to follow. Last but very important is social distancing for all.

As county judge, I am reluctant to sign a “masking order” that has very ambiguous enforcement provisions under the Governor’s
latest statement. Second, I do not want to place business owners and law enforcement in precarious positions.

Local governments may be able to pass more definitive orders to help bolster masking and public safety. I encourage them to do so
with extreme efforts to anticipate the many situations that will not fit the order and cause considerable confusion for the public.

We are appealing to the public to take personal responsibility and reduce this problem.
