Should a boss be able to fire someone for committing a crime outside of work? If so, for what
sort of crimes? How easy is it to fire someone in your country?
In general, I would say that justice must be restorative rather than punitive. That’s why a
felony like a bribe, an embezzlement or robbery in a criminal record shouldn’t be an
impediment for people have access to a job. However, there are crimes like rapes or sexual
harassment that are not compatible with certain jobs.
In my country, it’s really difficult to fire a teacher for instance. But, what happened if the
teacher has commited sexual harassment and they are working with kids? This is a grey area in
our labour laws. In one hand, the teachers statute stands by the workers and their right to
work. In the other hand, kids has to be protected. Finally, in this specific case, I won’t hesitate
to answer that kids health and safety should be prioritized.
