 My refection about “Tolerance: The Threshold of Peace, is all about the important values of tolerance for peace education. .

Tolerance as defined by UNESCO “as the respect, acceptance, and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world’s cultures, our forms

of expression and ways of being human”. Tolerance is an important concept that helps people to live together peacefully. Accepting

other people’s opinions and preferences even when they live in a way that you don’t agree with. Tolerance is the ability to the

fundamental of other cultures without using individuals or own culture to compare others. Tolerance is not an end but a means; it is

the minimal essential quality of social relations that eschew violence and coercion. Without tolerance peace is not possible. With

tolerance, panoply of positive human and social possibilities can be pursued, including the evolution of culture of peace. The

world would be a better place if we all became more tolerant of other beliefs. This will help the world to have peace and as one

culture. A way to change this is to change the teaching in school, whereas students can learn more about other cultures.

Promoting understanding and peace is innovative. We have to remind our learners why life is beautiful, why they should work

together and why we must help each other. Because it is not about race, or language, or colors, or religions, or who is right and who is

wrong, it’s about bringing together our world, healing each other, and embracing diversity, also teaching not to fear but love, and this

in return will give us a new peaceful world. Accepting and understanding are the answers to create peace, and this key is the way to

implement the values of tolerance, through various means. As the great Nelson Mandela said and I quote “Education is the most

powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. With an educational system, we can inspire the future generation to live in

peace, and they may pass on this idea to their children. Especially in primary school, if children are taught about this continually, there
is more chance that the lesson will stick to their minds, and maybe inspire them to do more for their communities and spread peace in

the process.

The ultimate aim of peace education is to develop a culture of peace and respect for cultural diversity. School heads, teachers

and stakeholders must implement policies that promote a culture of peace in every classroom to avoid bullying and discrimination and

must be integrates peace education across school curriculum so that every learner will instil in their minds and hearts the importance

of peace education. This creates challenges and tests our willingness to say, I can be a champion of peace! It is the ensuring drive to

meet the test which generates courage, which in turn is our source of strength to meet challenges head on.

Stakeholders has a very important role in achieving school projects, programs and activities, without the support of

stakeholders whether internal or external school project will not be possible. That is why school heads must collaborate with school

stakeholders to build a learning community founded on a culture of peace and respect for cultural diversity and to build a strong

linkage. Peace Education is the key that can break the student’s seemingly endless cycle of discrimination, bullying, stereotype and

prejudice, and provides the youth, with more opportunities for a better school where students feels they are in safe and peaceful

environment. For educating every learner about peace education is what our community and our country need to promote a life of

peace, joy and prosperity of our youth. Children are entitled to receive peace education which will promote respect to cultural

diversity, opportunity to develop individual judgment, and sense of moral and social responsibility, to become useful member in the

society. Horace Mann, the Father of Public Education, stated that the great equalizer in our culture was education. The opportunity for
equality, for social mobility, for the choice of an occupation regardless of birth, depends upon it.
