Overview
This Tech Tip describes the procedure to perform a full system backup and restoration of the
DAC 6000 system including Key List Server (KLS) data. These procedures are valid for all
DAC 6000 4.x releases. This procedure may be secondary if utilizing Motorola Automatic Backup
Service.

Recommendations
Motorola recommends that the following tasks be performed to ensure proper preparation for an
emergency restoration:
• It is critical to the restore process to use the most recent backup. Motorola highly
recommends that backups be performed on a monthly basis. This should include the
following:
ο A full system backup of the DAC 6000
ο A backup of the Unit Key List (UKL) data for the system
• Place the backup media and a copy of this Tech Tip in a secure location.
• Make a second copy of the data (for additional security) and keep it in a secure off-site
location.
• Verify that the Software is Onsite
1. Identify the applicable Software Items below in Table 1 that apply to the system.
2. Verify that each Current Version for those DAC/UKL Items in Table 1 below are present.

DAC 6000 System Backup Procedure

Whenever a controller malfunction occurs because of a hardware failure, the failure must first be
remedied before restoring the database and system. A restore operation is required for hardware
failures such as a DAC 6000 hard drive, motherboard, or control card. Recovery from a failure
usually requires restoring the database and system from the backup tape. Therefore, such tapes
need to be created in advance.
1. Shut down the business system.
2. Insert a tape into the tape drive.
3. Left-click the mouse anywhere on the screen to pull up the Root Menu.
4. Select Start Maintenance Operation choose Full System Backup.
5. Click Run.
6. A message stating You selected FULL SYTEM BACKUP. DAC 6000
application will be terminated. Do you want to continue? will be
displayed. Click Yes to continue.
7. Enter the superuser password at the prompt.
8. The following message is displayed:
WARNING: Before creating a FULL SYSTEM BACKUP TAPE this
program will terminate Sybase and DAC 6000 application. Do you
want to continue (Y/N)
9. Type y and press Enter.
10. Once the system backup to complete, the following message is displayed:
Do you want to reboot the system now (Y/N)

Warning: If a prompt appears to enter a second tape, the DAC 6000 system contains
unnecessary files such as log files which are taking up critical space on the system.
The DAC 6000 restoration procedure does not support restoration from more than
one tape. Delete as many of these unnecessary files as possible and restart the
backup procedure.

11. Type y and press Enter to reboot the system and restart the DAC 6000 application.
