Question

1. We already know that gummy bears expand when they are soaked in
coke, distilled water,and vinegar.

But will they expand when they are soaked in ginger ale, tap water, and
pepsi?
Hypothesis

By soaking the gummy bears in liquid

substance, the candy will expand. I think
because pepsi is a carbonated drink has
41 grams of sugar, the gummy bear will
expand up to 1.5 inches or more. The
second to the largest will be ginger ale
since it only has 32 grams of sugar. And
lastly, the tap water will be the
smallest because it does not contain
sugar and it is not carbonated.
Materials

● Cups
● Gummy bears
● Pepsi
● Tap Water
● Ginger ale
● Measuring tape/ruler
Procedure

- Using a measuring tape or a ruler,

measure (3) gummy bears.
- Fill each individual cups with pepsi,
tap water, and ginger ale
- Soak each gummy bear with the
liquid substance
- After (x) hours remove the gummy
bear from the cup and measure each
one.
Result/Data

1. Each single gummy bear started with

the measurement of 0.8 inches. The
gummies were soaked at 15:40.
2. At 23:40 I checked the gummies and
it has expanded; 1.1 in for the tap
water, 1.2 in for ginger ale, and
1.4 for pepsi.
3. After the 24 hour mark, I once
again checked the size of the gummy The longer the gummy bears were soaking in the
bears; 1.5 in for the tap water, liquid substance the more it got soggy and
breakable. The colors of the gummy bear
1.6 for ginger ale, 1.8 for pepsi.
changed close to the liquid. Thus, the pepsi
turned the gummy to a brown-ish color, the
water and ginger ale were more of a clear
color. You can definitely see the liquid
substance on the outer part of the gummy.
Results cont.

23:40 15:40
Conclusion

When a gummy bear is soaked in liquid it expands, because the

gummy bear is a solute and water or the other liquid substance
are solvent. The water moves into the gummy and that’s why it
expands and it becomes soggy and breaks easily.
