Summative of Pre-assessment -Literacy

1. Using Abecedarian Reading Assessments


- Diagnostic information about early reading skills for development of effective individualised
instruction to support student’s learning needs.
The student assessments were conducted in 3 different stages/phases particularly when
assessing student’s Decoding and Phonemes Awareness. Noted that student becomes
frustrated with the task and appears to be guessing or requesting to go toilet only after
10mins into the session even though she has gone to the toilet before commence of lesson.
Strategy:
Encourage student to take an active role in dialog and conversation; engage in conversation
about topics that interests her such as recent family or class trips or sharing experiences.
Use words that she familiar and have experiences with text.
When student shows sign of stress or anxiety, tactfully discontinue the assessment.
Engaged into conversation that excites her before tactfully continue with the lesson.

Results:
Letter knowledge/Alphabet Principles
Student passed on this task
Student has good letter knowledge and is able to identify almost all the letters in the
alphabet both upper and lower case accept for letter ‘l’ and ‘i‘.

Vocabulary
Student failed on this task
She has limited vocabulary knowledge and is able to identify some familiar words or when
words are translated in Mandarin; converse better in Mandarin language.
But she is unable to identify on vocabulary production, antonyms and synonyms.

Decoding
Student failed on this task. She struggle with most words in the Fluency task. Likewise for
both Irregular and Regular words too.

Phonemes Awareness
Student passed and able to do well on First Sounds.
But failed to do well for Segmentation and Last Sounds

Phonological Awareness
Did not assessed since student failed on Phonemes awareness.

2. SOLOM Teacher Observation


(Student Oral Language Observation Matrix)
The SOLOM is a rating scale that teachers can use to assess their students' command
of oral language on the basis of what they observe on a continual basis in a variety of
situations.

Results:
- Rating of ‘4’ for Comprehension, Pronunciation and Grammar.
- Rating of ‘3’ for Fluency and Vocabulary.
Total score: 18
Results indicates that student still lack proficiency in areas of Fluency and Vocabulary.
