The Formwork Failure Case

The construction of a concrete building usually requires formwork to support. Concrete forms
are engineered structures designed to support loads such as fresh concrete, construction
materials, workers, equipment, various impacts, and sometimes wind. The forms as they are
must at all times, support all the applied loads without collapse or extreme deflection.
Therefore, the formwork must be designed with quality, safety and economy in view.
Formwork is the total and overall system of support for freshly put concrete and includes the
covering that is in contact with the concrete likewise all other supporting members, hardware
and necessary bracing. On the other hand. Formwork can be constructed or customized to
meet a specific design produced by a competent person or a proprietary system which can
then be used in accord with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Formwork is the most
important factors in determining the success of a construction project in teams of speed,
quality, cost and safety of work as it accounts to nearly 32-40% of the total RCC project
cost and 75-80% of the project time . therefor though formwork is considered as temporary
work in the construction industry. It should not be treated as temporary and due caution
should be exercised while selecting a type of formwork by a civil engineer. all failures occur
at the time when concrete placement adds considerable weight and pressure on the formwork.
On normal wall forming, a "breakout" is common failure and it can occur on any height wall
at any time. Some of the major causes of breakouts are
1) Missing hardware- in order to speed up the job as forms are erected, only enough
hardware is connected to hold the form to place. As they follow up, workmen may
overload a location or two, or prior hardware may loosen and weaken the total
connection at a joint.
2) Improperly connected hardware- although most systems are fairly similar, some
use attached hardware while others do not. This can be a problem, for while it
appears the hardware and tie are connected, they may not be.
3) Tie ends not secured in place- in some systems, the tie end or loop is between the
forms and the connecting hardware can miss the loop of the tie. This leaves the tie
loose and the formwork unsecured.
4) Placing too fast- all ties are designed for a safe working load and the
manufacturers of ties will recommend the rate of placing under various conditions.
5) Damaged ties left in place- ties damaged during shipping or erection should be
replaced.
6) Improper tying- the use of the wrong size tie or the use of ties in a manner for
which they were not intended can cause trouble.
7) Insufficient tying- careful planning and control means that the correct number of
ties will be used, both vertically and horizontally.
8) Vibration- the proper vibrator should be selected for different types of work, to
avoid over-vibration or an increase in temporary pressure on the forms and ties.
9) Inadequate waling and strong backing- depending upon the formwork system
used, wales and strong backs may be used for alignment, structural strength and
tying.
Inadequate bracing- bracing usually begins with the plumbing and aligning of the
formwork. For high walls, braces can be spliced or cables and trusses used.

Beside the above cause there are some others reasons for failure the formwork. As below
1) Most engineers аnd аrсhitесtѕ hаvе thе еduсаtiоn, еxреriеnсе, аnd fundamental ѕkillѕ
tо build a fасilitу thаt’ѕ ѕаfе and ѕtrоng. But thеrе will аlwауѕ be those few who seem
to have ѕliрреd thrоugh the сrасkѕ. An engineer whо lacks thе соmреtеnсе tо properly
install fоrmwоrk will likеlу ѕеt a wеаk fоundаtiоn fоr thаt ѕtruсturе.
2) Cоnсrеtе nееdѕ timе tо ѕоlidifу аnd strengthen. Formwork moulds the concrete, ѕinсе
it starts оff in a liԛuid state, ѕо that it hаrdеnѕ intо thе shape intended by thе dеѕignеr.
Removing thаt fоrmwоrk tоо ѕооn iѕ аkin to removing a hаlf-сооkеd pancake frоm a
раn tоо еаrlу – it fаllѕ apart.
3) The materials uѕеd in formwork аrе gеnеrаllу mаdе оf ѕtееl, аluminum, or timbеr.
Althоugh thеу аrе sturdy, it’s possible to find weakened material out there, and if
uѕеd, it mау hindеr thе molding рrосеѕѕ.
4) Bluерrintѕ еxiѕt fоr a reason. There are a lоt оf саlсulаtiоnѕ both аеѕthеtiсаllу аnd
funсtiоnаllу tо make ѕurе that thе building ѕtаndѕ. If thе fоrmwоrk dоеѕn’t mееt
thоѕеrequirements, then thе likеlihооd оf hаving a wеаkеnеd ѕtruсturе inсrеаѕеѕ.
