As you will remember from module 1, {CLICK} Point products or data silos are created to meet
application and data growth, as well as greater service expectation

{CLICK} A common solution is to continue adding more people and resources to this problem
but it only creates greater complexity and risk.

The problem is organizations are addressing the symptoms, and not the underlying problem.
Organizations must change their current focus and realize that they do not have a
“storage” problem…what they have is a data management strategy problem.
Slide 4

Scale-up architectures increase cost & complexity

Your scale-up strategy for protecting data on-premises or in the cloud is directly causing:

Infrastructure
Applications

Data

Many IT departments do not realize that an estimated

70% of their data lives in secondary storage.1

1 Estimates based on Commvault data analysis of customers reporting their data storage usage type

A scale-up strategy typically involves making an infrastructure get bigger,

go faster, or both, by upgrading or replacing the hardware you already
have. Many organizations have adopted a scale-up strategy as standard for
protecting data on-premises or in the cloud. This approach is directly
causing a number of different challenges.

{CLICK1} Overbuying capacity to address future growth or underestimating

your storage needs
{CLICK 2} Missing service levels due to difficulty in scaling infrastructure
for operational needs
{CLICK 3} Multiple data silos preventing the integration of applications,
data, and infrastructure
{CLICK 4} Inability to migrate to the cloud or deliver new and faster
services
{CLICK 5} Complex management and operations require additional staff for
even simple tasks
{CLICK 6} Adding more hardware and staff is not a sustainable solution.
Organizations are moving forward without tackling the core issues: an
outdated data protection strategy built on a scale-up infrastructure.

Commvault HyperScale™ Technology is Commvault Complete™ Backup

and Recovery software that runs on {CLICK} a scale-out infrastructure. But
the key to this software is that is provides greater resiliency, availability,
scalability, and services for applications and data in an on-premises
structure. {CLICK} And because it’s Commvault®, it’s a single platform to
protect and manage your entire environment.

{CLICK} It delivers the powerful simplicity of the Commvault Data Platform

but in a highly available, integrated scale-out solution.
{CLICK} Now, you can build a fully modern data protection solution with
agile services in an easy-to-use unified platform with a unified
management interface that reduces complexity and can easily scale to
petabytes of data
{CLICK}It delivers a single environment for sharing compute and storage
resources using industry standard hardware.

Commvault HyperScale™ Technology can be deployed in two different

ways.

{CLICK} First, our Reference Architecture program provides customers with

validated blueprint hardware configurations they can purchase from their
reseller/server partner of choice. We believe there is, and will continue to
be, a more significant converged market for Commvault® software,
combined with industry leading server/storage hardware.

{CLICK} Second, where the IT generalist is becoming prevalent, we believe

there is a growing need for an all in one hardware and software solution
delivered from Commvault. This is the market we are serving with the
Commvault HyperScale Appliance offering.

We will discuss both of these implementation options in more detail in the

remainder of this module.
Slide 8

What is Commvault HyperScale™ Software?

• Software defined architecture
• Server based storage nodes
• Fast, easy deployment
• Horizontal & vertical scaling
• Inherent resiliency
Commvault HyperScale™ Storage Pool
Dynamic Expansion

Commvault HyperScale™ is a scale-out, software defined architecture that creates a {CLICK}

shared storage pool for data protection tasks.

{CLICK} Each HyperScale Storage Pool requires a minimum of three servers with similar
resources, known as nodes. Commvault HyperScale utilizes compute and storage elements from
widely available rack servers containing internal hard drives, based on a reference architecture
{CLICK} capable of achieving multi-petabyte scale, without having to purchase expensive
storage arrays or NAS devices. HyperScale utilizes erasure coding, {CLICK} where the data
itself is redundantly replicated allowing for multiple drive or node failures without the need for
dedicated storage controllers or storage arrays.

Under-the-hood, {CLICK} each HyperScale node is a MediaAgent, which means that the
compute power to process data management tasks in addition to back-end storage capacity,
can be scaled easily to meet the exact requirements of the environment.

{CLICK}
Commvault HyperScale™ is simple to install, with bare metal to operation in as little as 30
minutes. Just like Commvault Complete™ Backup and Recovery, you can easily configure,
manage and support your Commvault HyperScale™ Software through the Commvault Admin
Console.

While a build-your-own solution allows for greater customization, it often requires staffing
resources and time to bring the system into production. The Commvault ® Validated Reference
Design Program simplifies designing, planning, and implementing solutions using Commvault
HyperScale™ Software. Commvault Validated Reference Designs deliver tested
configurations with leading hardware vendor technology that provide validated designs
complemented by best practice configurations that will accelerate ROI, reduce complexity, and
add customer value.

{CLICK} Commvault is actively working with 8 vendors in the program today, with potential for
other vendors to be qualified based on customer and market demands. The validated reference
designs goes through a series of development stages starting with vendor qualification and
creating release candidates all the way through to testing, validation and finally - external
publication.

{CLICK} There are now several validated reference designs, generally available via
commvault.com. We encourage our partners to work with their local Commvault representative
on opportunities involving vendor reference design candidates.

So why would you position Commvault HyperScale™ Software to your

prospects and customers?

{CLICK} Simplicity and ease-of-use of a single scale-out infrastructure built

on your customers choice of hardware platform(s). The Commvault®
Reference Design architecture streamlines processes and saves staff time
over a traditional “build-it-yourself” solution, when considering the typical
acquisition, installation, integration, and administration cycles.

{CLICK} Increase solution availability with scale-out technology. Customers

looking for higher availability and faster recovery from hardware failures,
can eliminate the outdated rebuild times of RAID-based solutions with
smart software defined scale-out infrastructure.

{CLICK} Deliver greater flexibility with agile and predictable services,

eliminating the usual fork-lift upgrades. Customers can even Mix ‘n match
different vendor hardware platforms and hardware generations. Easily
scale to meet the needs of enterprise customers, reducing downtime and
maintenance windows required to add additional capacity and compute.

{CLICK} Reduce Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), by leveraging general

purpose x86 hardware and avoid vendor-lockin. Overcome the challenges
of hardware and software costs and scale found with traditional backup
software, proprietary appliances, and scale-up architectures. Customers
can adopt a cloud-like economic model; purchase only what they need and
when they need it and no longer needing to make the 3 to 5 year storage
purchases.

Better economics and server density make building your own data management infrastructure a
great fit for large enterprises or for those with specific hardware requirements.

However, traditional “build-if-yourself” solutions that are not based on a validated reference
architecture, do have certain considerations…

The typical steps the customers have to go through include - Acquisition, Installation &
Integration, Administration, Patching and Upgrades, and Support.

There are numerous components which must be ordered, interoperability of the components
must be verified, install and integration takes hours sometimes days, configuration is tested and
performance tweaked. For administering the infrastructure, the customer is faced with multiple
components to manage, multiple patches, firmware updates that are separate and need to be
tested. Support often turns into the finger pointing game with 3, 4 or even 5 vendors. Lastly,
the adding of capacity without adding more compute often leads to unpredictable performance
and may lead to unforeseen costs.

In light of all this, there is an easier way…
