Expectations of a Counselor

The general expectations of students of a good counselor are the following:

1. Empathetic person whose character and personality embraces the consideration that the student has untrained
set of skills in the specific trade or craft of the counselor.

2. The students or attendees have minimal knowledge of the fundamental aspects of the trade or profession
where the counselor is an expert. He will stick to the primary objective of conveying enough knowledge of the
trade or profession where he is an expert to the listeners.

3. The students or attendees will also have a dedicated person who will manage and facilitate the different
aspects of the training. The counselor will have a calendar or schedule of the training from the basic to the
advance stages of the topics discussed.

4. The existing abilities of the students will be appreciated and in some instances be applied in different aspects
of the training which will guide the students to a better understanding of the methods of learning conducted by
the counselor.

5. The counselor will be able to use scenario-based modules which will introduce the concepts discussed in the
classroom setting into actual community settings. The theories and principles will be applied by the students
using procedures or methods of the medical profession.

6. The counselor is also able to extend expert advice to the students during questions propounded in the subjects
discussed. He also listens well to the students when they ask about the unclear topics to be able to answer them
promptly.

7. The counselor is free from personal biases and holds personal convictions away from distracting the training
or the module discussions.

8. The counselor shall effectively gauge the competency of each of the students using evaluation techniques
appropriate for the subject matter.

9. Lastly, he is an effective communicator. Being an effective communicator allows him to engage his students
attention to the topics discussed.
