Understanding “Pests”
in the Garden
Understanding “Pests” in the Garden
• According to Dr. Yangsang Cho of JADAM Organic Farming:
In Nature, The objective of a tree or a vegetable is to
propagate itself. They need their seeds to be scattered as far
and wide as possible
• And who will do this for them if they cannot move? –
insects and animals
• And how will the insects and animals be enticed by the
plants to do this work for them?
• By producing shiny, colorful and fragrant fruits and flowers.
Understanding “Pests” in the Garden
• By making their fruits, which contain the seeds, more
attractive to insects and animals, it will look more inviting
and enticing do the propagation work for them
• We have to understand that these “pests” are a part of a
holistic and sustainable system in nature
• As for non-propagating insects, They are attracted to the
health of our plants which is an ideal host for their young or
breeding ground as well as a rich source of food
Where does humans come in?
• The purpose of farming is to produce food for human
consumption and do the propagation work of the plants for
them instead of the insects and animals.
Disadvantages of
Using Chemical Insect
Spray
Disadvantages of Using Chemical Insect
Spray
• Very dangerous to humans(both
farmer and consumer) and to the
environment
• High cost/high risk
• It can develop immunity and
resistance to pests
Natural Pest
Management

Natural Pest Management Techniques
• Multi-cropping • Beneficial Insects
• Crop rotation • Flowers & herbs

planting
• Net bagging
MULTI-CROPPING
COMPANION PLANTING
CROP ROTATION
Objectives of Crop Rotation

1.To maintain proper balance

of nutrients in the soil
2.To break the life-cycle of
insects
Herbs (Insect Repellents)
Flowers – Attractants and
Repellants
Biological Pest Control
• Predators – mobile
insects that hunt
for harmful
animal, which they
kill eg. Spiders,
frogs, birds,
earwigs.
Biological Pest Control
• Parasites –
creatures that live
inside the harmful
animal, which
they kill eg.
Trichogramma
and Parasitic
wasps
Biological Pest Control

• Species-specific
disease – culture of
micro control
agents like “Bacillus
Thuringiensis”
bacteria (not GMO)
Use of Net Bags
Botanical Pest Control (EM5)
Sticky Traps
Sticky Traps
Common Pests and
How to treat them
FRUITFLY
Characteristics

• Dull tan to brownish

yellow or brownish black;
• Eyes usually bright red.
• Larvae are nearly white,
except mouth hooks which
are black and the tips of
the abdominal breathing
pores which are yellowish.
FRUITFLY
Host range
• Cucurbits (watermelon,
muskmelon, bitter gourd,
ridge gourd, pumpkin)
• Solanaceous (tomato,
eggplant, sweet pepper)
• Legumes
• Fruit crops (papaya,
jackfruit, avocado,
pummelo)
FRUITFLY
Control measures
• Net bags- Wrapping of the fruit
with newspaper, nylon net or
polyethylene sleeve (especially for
long, thin cucurbit fruits).
• Use of attractants (pheromones)
for suppression of male
population.
• Sticky traps
• Botanical Spray
Aphids

Characteristics
• Small sap-sucking
insects
• Soft bodied
• Color may be green,
black, brown, pink
• 2 short antennae
• Usually found with
ants
Note:
• Ants are commonly found with aphids and white
flies because they drop honeydews which is from
the sap of the plant which ants cannot extract

• The ants carry the aphids on to plants because

they cannot fly

• Aphids suck the sap from the plants and then

produces honeydew which is food for the ants

• White flies, having the ability to fly, doesn’t need

the help of ants but as suckers, they also produce
honewdew and this attracts ants.
Aphids
Host range
• Cucurbits (watermelon,
muskmelon, cucumber,
bitter gourd, ridge
gourd, bottle gourd,
pumpkin)
• Solanaceous (tomato,
pepper, eggplant)
• Brassicas
• Legumes
Aphids
Control

• Spray Calphos or any Vinegar Based Botanical Spray.

• Pruning of the heavily infested plant parts and proper disposal

(bury or burn).

• Use of yellow sticky traps to lessen aphid population.

• Use of botanical extracts such as neem, kakawate, hot pepper

and ginger extracts(EM5)

• Use of plastic mulch

• Intercrop with chives

Cucurbit Beetle

Characteristics
• Hard shelled
• Often orange,
sometimes stripped
and spotted
Cucurbit Beetle
Host range
• Cucurbits
(watermelon,
muskmelon,
cucumber, ridge
gourd, bottle
gourd, pumpkin)
Cucurbit Beetle
Control
• Yellow Sticky Trap
• Botanical Spray
• Avoid monocropping
• Intercrop with radish, corn or
broccoli
• Broadcast Wood Ash or CRH
Ash
• Tirricide (“tiris”) – collection
of beetle in the early morning
White Fly
Characteristics
• Sap sucking insects
• Produces honeydew for
ants
• Can cause yellowing or
death of leaves
• Not real flies. Close
relative of aphids

Cucurbit Beetle

Control
• EM5 or Botanical Sprays
• Sticky traps
• Elimination of weeds.
• Intercrop with Onion
Broad mites
Characteristics
• a microscopic species
of mite
• Suckers
• translucent and
colorless to pale
brown
Broad mites
Host range
• Solanaceous
(eggplant, pepper,
tomato, potato)
• Cucurbits
(cucumber)
• Brassicas
Broad mites
Control
• Pruning and proper disposals
of infested plant parts (bury
or burn).
• Smudging or smoking using
rice hull, rice straw, sawdust
etc.
• Moku Saku (Wood Vinegar)
• Spraying of botanical
insecticides (EM5) such as hot
pepper and kakawate extracts.
Flea Beetle
Characteristics
• small and shiny, with
large rear legs
• vary from black to tan
or other colors, solid, or
spotted
• . You can see them if
you approach quietly,
but they will spring
away quickly
if disturbed.
Flea Beetle

Host range
• Brassicas (pechay,
cauliflower,
broccoli, arugula)
Flea Beetle

Control
• Spray botanical pests control
like EM5
• Intercrop with parsley, chives
and onion
