FEATURES OFMICROSOFT WORD

MICROSOFT WORD IS A WORD PROCESSOR DESIGNED BY MICROSOFT. IT WAS


FIRST RELEASED IN 1983 UNDER THE NAME MULTI-TOOL WORD FOR XENIX
SYSTEMS.

1. NORMAL.DOT
NORMAL.DOT IS THE MASTER TEMPLATE FROM WHICH ALL WORD DOCUMENTS
ARE CREATED. IT IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FILES IN MICROSOFT
WORD. IT DETERMINES THE MARGIN DEFAULTS AS WELL AS THE LAYOUT OF
THE TEXT AND FONT DEFAULTS. ALTHOUGH NORMAL.DOT IS ALREADY SET
WITH CERTAIN DEFAULTS, THE USER CAN CHANGE NORMAL.DOT TO NEW
PARAMETERS.

2. WORDART
WORDART ENABLES DRAWING TEXT IN A MICROSOFT WORD DOCUMENT SUCH
AS A TITLE, WATERMARK, OR OTHER TEXT, WITH GRAPHICAL EFFECTS SUCH AS
SKEWING, SHADOWING, ROTATING, STRETCHING IN A VARIETY OF SHAPES AND
COLORS AND EVEN INCLUDING THREE-DIMENSIONAL EFFECTS.

3. MACRO
WORD FILES CAN INCLUDE ADVANCED MACROS AND EVEN EMBEDDED
PROGRAMS. THE LANGUAGE WAS ORIGINALLY WORDBASIC, BUT CHANGED
TO VISUAL BASIC FOR APPLICATIONS AS OF WORD 97. A PROMINENT
EXAMPLE WAS THE MELISSA WORM, BUT COUNTLESS OTHERS HAVE EXISTED IN
THE WILD. NEARLY ALL ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE CAN DETECT AND CLEAN
COMMON MACRO VIRUSES.

4. LAYOUT ISSUES
 THE PROGRAM WAS UNABLE TO HANDLE LIGATURES DEFINED
IN TRUETYPE FONTS THOSE LIGATURE GLYPHS WITH UNICODE CODEPOINTS
MAY BE INSERTED MANUALLY, BUT ARE NOT RECOGNIZED BY WORD FOR WHAT
THEY ARE, BREAKING SPELLCHECKING, WHILE CUSTOM LIGATURES PRESENT IN
THE FONT ARE NOT ACCESSIBLE AT ALL.

5. BULLETS AND NUMBERING


Word has extensive list bullets and numbering feature used for tables, list,
pages, chapters, headers, footnotes, and tables of content. Bullets and
numbering can be applied directly or using a button or by applying a style
or through use of a template. HOWEVER, THE BULLETS AND NUMBERING
SYSTEM HAS BEEN SIGNIFICANTLY OVERHAULED FOR OFFICE 2007, WHICH IS
INTENDED TO REDUCE THE SEVERITY OF THESE PROBLEMS.

CREATING TABLES
Users can also create tables in MS Word. Depending on the version, Word
can perform simple calculations. Formulas are supported as well .

6. USING FORMULAS
As mentioned in Creating Tables, MS Word supports the use of formulas.
To access Word's formula function in Word 2007, click anywhere in a
table, then choose Table Tools>>Layout. To access Word's formula
function in Word 2003, select Table>>Formula. The formula function is on
the ribbon in the Data section. Click on the Formula icon to open the
Formula Dialog box. At the top of the Formula box is a place to enter a
formula. Formulas use a similar convention as that used in Excel. Cell
references use the "A1" reference style. Formulas are written using cell
references (for example =A1+A2).

7. AUTOSUMMARIZE
AutoSummarize highlights passages or phrases that it considers valuable.
The amount of text to be retained can be specified by the user as a
percentage of the current amount of text. FIRST, AUTOSUMMARIZE
IDENTIFIES THE MOST COMMON WORDS IN THE DOCUMENT (BARRING "A" AND
"THE" AND THE LIKE) AND ASSIGNS A "SCORE" TO EACH WORD—THE MORE
FREQUENTLY A WORD IS USED, THE HIGHER THE SCORE. 

8. AUTOCORRECT
In Microsoft Office 2003, AutoCorrect items added by the user stop
working when text from sources outside the document is pasted in.

9. SUBSCRIPT AND SUPERSCRIPT ISSUES


In any of the Microsoft word packages, it is impossible to display
superscript exactly lying above subscript. It can only be done using the
equation editor.

10. IMPROVED SPELL CHECKS

Word 2010 has added some new features to its spell checker,
now it will detect the mistake and suggest changing the
sentence.

11. THE BACKGROUND REMOVAL OPTION

Removal, which simply removes the background of any image.


Yes, you don’t need Photoshop anymore to remove the
background. First insert the picture in Office 2010 has an
awesome option by the name of  Background your Word
document from the INSERT > PICTURE option. Then locate
the BACKGROUND REMOVAL TOOL and get rid of the background. You

12. FIND AND REPLACE
The find command. This if you need to find a particular word or phrase in
your document, you can use command is especially useful when you are
working with large files. If you want to search the entire document, simply
execute the Find command. If you want to limit your search to a selected
area, select that area and then execute the Find command.

13. CHANGE THE FONT SIZE


A font is a set of characters (text) represented in a single
typeface. Each character within a font is created by using the
same basic style. In Microsoft Word, you can change the size of
your font. The following exercise illustrates changing the font
size.

DEFINITELY HAVE WIDE APPLICATION.BELOW THERE ARE TWO IMAGES

16. OUTLOOK IMPROVEMENTS
 OUTLOOK 2010 ALSO MAKES IT EASIER TO MANAGE CONVERSATIONS.
WHEN YOU VIEW MESSAGES IN CONVERSATION VIEW, YOU CAN RIGHT-
CLICK A CONVERSATION TITLE AND SELECT FROM A NUMBER OF ACTIONS
THAT YOU CAN PERFORM, AS SHOWN IN FIGURE BELOW. IF YOU SELECT
CLEAN UP CONVERSATION, REDUNDANT MESSAGES IN THE CONVERSATION
WILL BE DELETED.
17. PRINTING HAS BECOME EASY

 Printing has been significantly improved in Office 2010. The new


print menu in will allow you to change the print settings as well
as see the print preview in the same window.

 WORD 2010 ALSO COMES WITH A SCREEN CAPTURE TOOL TO TAKE SCREEN
SHOT OF ANY IMPORTANT PART OF DOCUMENT. THIS BASIC SCREEN
CAPTURE TOOL IS NOT REPLACEMENT FOR MORE ADVANCED SCREEN CAPTURE
SOFTWARE, LIKE SNAGIT, BUT IT’S VERY USEFUL AND HANDY IF YOU ARE
LOOKING FOR ONLY BASIC SCREEN CAPTURE TOOL. IT IS
ESPECIALLY HANDY IF YOU ARE WRITING A SHORT TUTORIAL FOR
COWORKERS OR TO HELP A FRIEND OR FAMILY MEMBER REMEMBER HOW TO
DO SOMETHING.
19. NAVIGATION PANE
ANOTHER NEW FEATURE ON WORD 2010 IS THE NAVIGATION PANE. THIS
REPLACES THE “FIND” WINDOW WHICH USED TO APPEAR WHEN YOU USED
“CTRL +F”. WITH THE NAVIGATION PANE, YOUR SEARCH WILL WORK
MUCH FASTER AND ALLOW YOU TO SEE HEADING VIEW, THUMBNAIL PAGE
VIEW AND THE SEARCH RESULT. AN EXAMPLE OF THE NAVIGATION PANE IS
SHOWN BELOW.

20. COLLABORATION

COLLABORATION, OR CO-AUTHORING, IS ONE OF MOST EXCITING NEW


FEATURES IN WORD 2010. CO-AUTHORING ALLOWS MORE THAN ONE
PERSON TO EDIT A DOCUMENT AT SAME TIME. WORD 2010 WILL NOT ONLY
ALLOW USERS TO EDIT THE DOCUMENT AT SAME TIME BUT WILL ALSO LET
YOU KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE EDITING IT AND SHARE CHANGES. AS
SOON AS YOU OPEN A SHARED DOCUMENT THE WORD STATUS BAR WILL LET
YOU KNOW THAT IF IT’S BEING EDITED BY SOMEONE ELSE AND YOU CAN
BEGIN CO-AUTHORING.
