12 Incredible Fun Orchid Facts That You Need To See

Immediately:
1. Orchids are the largest family of flowering plants.
They have also been around the longest as they are one of the oldest flowers in existence.
Since varieties of orchids are found all over the world, it’s accepted that orchids were in
existence prior to the separation of the continents.
2. There are more than 25,000 documented orchid species throughout the world.
This means the number of orchids on the planet is four times the number of birds and four
times the number of mammals! That’s A LOT of orchids!!
3. Although generally thought of as a tropical plant, orchids grow on every continent.
From the Arctic Circle to the southernmost jungle (except Antarctica). They’re valued and
thought of as beautiful across continents and cultures with varying meanings and customs
surrounding their existence.
4. The smallest orchid is the size of a dime.
This amazing orchid is small enough to fit in a doll house!
5. The vanilla orchid (and its vanilla bean) is the only commercially grown orchid
crop (Vanilla planifolia).
Orchids yummy enough to eat and cook with!
6. Orchids have the tiniest seeds in the world.
This makes them a challenge to grow and cultivate. They take forever to sprout and
actually turn into a plant! Growing orchids from seeds is only for the patient and very green-
thumbed.
7. There can be up to 3 million seeds in a single orchid seedpod.
You’ll never see them though, they are the size of a speck of dust and are only visible
under a microscope. Part of the reason for their small size is that they lack an endosperm
and have no nutrients within. They require contact with a particular fungus to germinate and
grow. We find this fact particularly interesting!
8. It takes patience to grow an orchid.
The plant’s first flowers won’t appear until at least 5 to 7 years after germination. The
houseplants you find in stores are often a decade old. From duck to swan!
9. Some orchid flowers bloom for mere hours, while others last up to half a year.
Phaleanopsis orchids are versatile enough to last in a cut flower arrangement longer than
most. That’s why we like Phalaenopsis orchids the best!
10. Orchid flowers always grow upside down when mature.
The orchid can have enough blooms to be heavy enough for the orchid to hang down.
Gravity always wins!
11. Orchid plants can live to be up to 100 years old.
Who said orchids are hard to grow??
12. Orchids have become one of the most popular houseplants of all time.

We would like to think that all or our customers have at least one phalaenopsis orchid plant
in their home to enjoy. We get to enjoy a whole greenhouse of Phalaenopsis Orchids .
How many orchid plants do you have in your home?

Last December I went orchid crazy. Purchased several orchids from a home improvement
store others from a super market and around Christmas I was at Lowe’s and purchased two
more, and the dollar amount was higher, but very attractive and had this strange looking
piece of wood in them. I changed media on all my orchids and wanted to create a center
piece for my table. Well, all lost their flowers and some just died except the two I bought
from Lowe’s, it is now the beginning of February and they still have all their flowers. Today I
went looking for the instructions that came with the plants and found this web site printed
on the instructions and I want to say thank you. I will certainly look for this grower orchids in
the future. I mentioned Lowe’s since this is not on your list of places to buy. Definitely look
for this company went buying orchids well worth the extra $$$.

Just bought one of your color infused purple orchid. I have a number of orchids but this is
the most vivid orchid I have ever seen. Was a little pricy but is covered with many buds. I
wanted to know when it blooms again next year what color might I expect it to be.

Mary,
We have two infused purple orchids. The Lavender Myst, which will re-bloom white. The
Purple Fusion color will re-bloom a beautiful purple color.

I received my first Plainview orchid at Easter this year 2017. It is so beautiful in color
(purples) and looks to be healthy. I really want to make it survive and so far I’ve lost two
flowers. How often do flowers fall off? I have moved it to another location. I’ve watered it
twice since Easter. Most of my worry comes from watering it. Some tell me to use ice cubes
therefore I would not overwater. One a week they say. This was not mentioned on your
instructions. Thank you for your help.

My husband bought me 2 of the most beautiful green orchids in a ceramic pot, for my
Birthday which is the day after St. Patrick’s Day. They lost their blooms n the stem died, but
the leaves are still green n at the top of the soil a whitish green thing is sprouting what is it?
Should I repot them in a pot that has drainage or are they dead n I should just throw them
away? We went by the instructions! This really hurt me, because my Daughter has had
hers for 5yrs. n have never lost a bloom. Her friend raises them n she told Teresa every
few mos. put 3 ice cubes in them. This bothers me, Teresa has a “Black Thumb” when it
comes to flowers. Hopefully you can help me!!

I have The Blue Diamond Colorfuze orchid, This is my first orchid ever !! So far it is healthy,
seems strong, and beautiful !! I am interested in collecting and making more….is it true in
order to avoid over watering, place an ice cube in the moss when it seems dry? Any tips on
keeping this beauty lively and any help with “spike” re rooting, please keep me posted?
Thank you =)

You guys! You spelled “of” with an “R” instead of an “F”! 🙁
