EMMA

The Emma novel has as her protagonist the young and eccentric Emma
Woodhouse who has the world at her feet. He lives with his father in a beautiful
and comfortable house, but he gets a little bit bored. She decides she will never
marry, and yet she does not bother to arrange the marriages for the women
around her. After her government marries and moves into her husband's house,
Emma bored her attention on her young girlfriend, Harriet, whom she wants to
find a husband.
Emma Woodhouse, beautiful, smart and rich, with a pleasant home and
cheerfulness, seemed to be part of society's spoilers. "That's how the Emma novel
opens. It's a story of love and friendship, this time we're dealing with all sorts of
characters, each one of a certain typology and spinning in the higher circles of
Highbury.
Emma plays God in her little world, pushing the destinies of her friends as she
thinks fit, and counting her immune to any long-lasting romantic feelings.
In order to help a friend get married well, she only removes her from the best
man for her. After things get bad, it's up to Emma to fix them. Emma, who is
described to us at first as "beautiful, smart and rich, with a pleasant home,"
proves to us that he has plenty of flaws: proud, spoiled, too confident in his own
forces, careless when he receives advice. From the intention of helping, it causes
more harm than good. The novel builds on these flaws of Emma. Her personality
changes as she realizes that she, like every human being, is subjected to
misconduct and her actions have negative repercussions on others.
Aware of the human nature and the morals of society, Jane Austen highlights
ironically several times of time, such as women's role in society, arranged
marriages, or social class differences. Although most of her characters seem to
conform to the rules of society, the real views of the writer can be read among
the lines. Feminism in Jane Austen's works is very subtle, but she was among the
first writers to have encouraged the idea of marriage in love and not status.
