Testing Your Creativity….

Here are a dozen McLuhan quotations. I’m asking you to conceive single-panel
cartoon ideas that illustrate these ideas. The cartoons should be funny or at
minimum, cleverly witty, in the manner of single-panel cartoons in the New
Yorker magazine. If you need to split the panel for effect, that’s okay. Speech
and thought bubbles are fine. I am especially partial to ideas that exceed the
bounds of graphic representation, ala Saul Steinberg or many of the graphics in
Nick Sousanis’s Unflattening.

All war is civil war.

Breakdown becomes breakthrough…

Know-how has obliterated the why, what, and when.

The day an engineer or a medical student graduates, he is obsolete.

The new reality is in the image and not behind it.


Only puny secrets protection. Big secrets are protected by public incredulity.
The future of the book is the blurb.
Learning creates ignorance. / White creates black. / The public creates privacy.
Affluence creates poverty.
A man wrapped up in himself makes a small package.
A man’s home is his hassle.
Dictionaries have merely driven words out of their senses.
We live science fiction.
If I made a cautious, measured statement someone might mistake me for a
stable character.
Since life is short our faces must be long.
This information is top security. When you have read it, destroy yourself.
People really do think of themselves as specialized machines nowadays. ‘That’s
just my speed’ is a most revealing remark.
