SURFACE AREAS AND VOLUMES

We have learnt about common solids and how to calculate their surface areas and volumes. In this chapter, we will learn to find
objects that are a combination of basic solids. We come across such objects in our daily life.

Dadaji remembers
The topic explains how Aryanath became a snake charmer. From the time of his grandfather and great grandfather, they have
mers. Snakes have been an important part of their life.

Para 1 Remember this? This object of fascination? It’s a hand fan.

Now, these fans are a thing of the past. But back in the day, people had to use
this hand-held fan, wave it back and forth to cool themselves. Imagine doing
this all night to keep yourself cool on a hot summer night? Exhausting, isn’t it?
Then, we had the invention of the table fan, which made a powerful entry into
our homes, making life a whole lot easier. This electrical device only needed to
be plugged into the electrical power mains and switched on. There was no
Para 2 physical energy required. Why don’t you give it a try.

Isn’t it amazing? All that effort that had to be put to use a hand fan was
eliminated just by using some electrical energy. How did this happen? How do
Para 3 the blades of the fan rotate on their own?

A fan is powered by an electric motor. What is an electric motor? An electric

motor is a device that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. It is
this electric motor, inside the fan, that facilitates the rotation of the blades when
Para 4 it is powered.

This has to be in very informal language. More interactive. Day to day
