Beginning the novel, Rodger Chillingworth’s character is elusive

he is described as an intelligent and kind hearted scholar and medical

professional. This moment paints him in a positive light even though his intentions
are clearly driven to find out who Hester slept with. As soon as he sees Arthur
Dimmesdale kiss Pearl on the forehead, his game plan changes.
Chillingworth spends the next few years becoming the confidant of the reverend
Dimmesdale, invading every inch of the poor man’s soul until he finds what he
wants. is all a facade. He is his “physician”, but there is no real evidence of
medical care in the novel; besides some natural remedies. His intent is not to cure
the man, but break him. This finally happens at Chillingworth’s climactic
development change. Chillingworth’s sick joy increases at the torture and
suffering he is causing him.
Chillingworth can be viewed as one of the more interesting characters in the
novel. What was once a kind hearted scholar has now become a descendent of
the devil himself. This is how powerful the realms of jealousy and vengeance can
bring upon someone. After Hester threatens to tell Dimmesdale the truth of
everything and expose them all, the readers are left with an unknown result that
this will bring from Chillingworth’s actions. He is capable of anything; especially
putting his brilliant mind against someone to cause harm. He has already become
one of the most fierce antagonists in the Romantic Era’s literature, and his part in
this story is not over yet.

Dimmesdale walks around with his sin kept as secret, because he never
admits his sin, his mental state is changing, and the sin degrades his well-
being. Chillingworth is Hester's husband, the man he cheats on with
Dimmsdale. He also changes with the effects of the sin. He is on a quest for
revenge, on a quest to find the father and to torture him. This changes the
type of man he was. Throughout the Scarlet Letter, the main characters
undergo a lot of change and transformation. Dimmsdales sins affects his
physical well-being, and his mental stability.and that’s lead him to death .

the way Hester is viewed, by both herself and others, changes over the years
since she commits her sin. In the beginning, her sin weighs her down. She is
ashamed by the "A" she wears. The people who know about her and her sin,
disrespect her, and look down upon her. She is being teased by children, and
strangers make faces at her. Others, who know about her, make nasty
comments about her both, to her face and behind her back. She is being
degraded as a human being, but she accepts the torture because she knows
they are consequences of her actions. Eventually, she continues to work with
the community and her statusbegins to change. The symbols meaning goes
from Adultery to Able.
She becomes stronger and mentally more courageous. When she removes
her "A" in the forest she completely changes. In the 3rd paragraph of chapter
13, Hawthorne writes, "Such helpfulness was found in her,—so much power
to do, and power to sympathize,—that many people refused to interpret the
scarlet A by its original signification. They said that it meant Abet; so strong
was Hester Prynne, with a woman's strength." Her change transforms her to a
new person. It changes her so much, Pearl, couldn't even recognize her.
