STANDARD PRACTICE SP-79 FOREWORD This document establishes a Standard Practice for Socket Welding Reducer Inserts produced for a number of years by various manufacturers to varying dimensions although basically similar in principle. Users should note reducers furnished from existing stocks may have slightly different dimensions than shown in Table 3. MSS. Mss STANDARDPRACTICE SED SP-79 SOCKET WELDING REDUCER INSERTS 0. PURPOSE To provide a Standard Practice establishing require- ‘ments for insert type fittings, which effectively, after ‘welded installation, creates a socket welded reduced end fiting, such as a Tee, 90 degree Ell, Cross, 45 degree Ell, Coupling, etc. 1. SCOPE 1.1 General This Standard Practice covers ratings, dimensions, tolerances, finish, marking and material requirements for socket welding reducer inserts for ‘use with ASME B16.11, Class 3000 and 6000 socket, welding fittings. Dimensions for these reducer in- serts are shown in Table 3. 1.1.1 Fitting Sizes/Pipe Correlation Fittings cov- cred by this Standard Practice are shown in Table 1, by class, size range and correlation to the schedule ‘number or wall designation of pipe for calculation of ratings. 1.12 Partial Compliance Fittings Fittings with special dimensions and fittings made from non-stan- dard materials may be designed and manufactured by agreement between the manufacturer and the pur- chaser, provided they are marked in accordance with the requirements for partial compliance fittings of 5.1.1 ©). 1.2. Service Conditions Criteria for selection of fitting type and materials suitable for particular fluid type and materials suitable for particular fluid ser- vice are not within the scope of this Standard Prac- tice. 1.3. Welding Except for the CAUTIONARY NOTE (Section 12) and the GAP RECOMMEN- DATIONS (Figure | and Figure 2), installation weld- ing requirements are not within the scope of this Stan- dard Practice. Installation welding shall be done in accordance with the applicable piping system into which the fittings are to be installed. REFERENCES 2.1 Referenced Standards Standards and specifi- cations adopted by this Standard Practice are shown in Annex A, which is part of this Standard Practice. It is not considered practical to identify the specific edition of each standard and specification in the in- dividual references. Instead, the specific edition ref erence is identified in Annex A. A fitting made in conformance and conforming to this Standard Prac- tice in all other respects will be considered to be in conformance to the Standard Practice, even though the edition reference may be changed in a subse- ‘quent addendum to or revision of the Standard Prac- tice. 2.2 Codes of Regulations A fitting used under the jurisdiction of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Ves- sel Code, the ASME Code for Pressure Piping, or a governmental regulation is subject to any limitation of that code or regulation. This includes any maxi- ‘mum temperature limitation, or rule governing the use of material at lw temperature, or provisions for operation at a pressure exceeding the pressure rat- ings in this Standard Practice. MSS. STANDARD PRACTICE. SP-75 MsS__ STANDARD PRACTICE SP 3. SIZE 3.1 The nominal size of the fittings refers to the nominal O.D. of the pipe to which it is attached. 4. DESIGN PROOF-TEST 4.1. Proof tests shall be made as set forth herein as evidence of the adequacy of the design references in Section 2. Records of design or successful proof tests shall be available at the manufacturer's facil- ity for inspection by the purchaser. 4.2. Unless otherwise agreed upon between manu facturer and purchaser, the only required proof test is a bursting strength test. 4.2.1 Prototype fittings that are representative of production and selected for test shall be identified ‘as to material, grade, and lot, including heat treat- ment. They shall be inspected for dimensional com- pliance to this Standard Practice. 4.2.2. Straight seamless or welded pipe sections, with a calculated burst strength at least as great as that calculated for the fittings, shall be welded to cach end of the fitting to be tested. Any internal misalignment greater than 0.06 inch shall be reduced by taper boring at a slope not over a 1 to 3 ratio. The length of pipe sections for closures shall be at least twice the pipe O.D. 4.2.2.1 Shorter lengths may be used as follows: 1) The assembly must withstand at least 105 per cent of the proof-test pressure computed in Section 4.2.4, 2) Minimum length of pipe shall be one pipe O.D. for NPS 14 and smaller. 3) Minimum length of pipe shall be one-half pipe O.D. for sizes larger than NPS 14. 4.2.2.2 Test fluid shall be water or other liquid used for hydrostatic testing, 4.2.3 Hydrostatic pressure shall be applied until the fitting ruptures. The actual test pressure prior to, rupture must atleast equal the computed proof-test pressure. Alternately, the test is successful if the assembly withstands, without rupture, 105 percent of the computed proof-test pressure defined in Sec- tion 4.2.4. 4.24 Computed Proof-Test Pressure: P = 25¢. Which refers to the pipe which => the fiting’s marking identifies (See Section 8.1.1) and, where: iis the computed minimum proof-test pressure; psig Sis the actual tensile strength of the test fitting ‘material (determined on a specimen representative of the test fitting); psi + is the nominal pipe wall thickness; in inches Dis the specified outside diameter of pipe; in inches 4.3 A successful proof test on a prototype fitting, selected as required in Section 4.2.1 may be used to qualify other fittings to the extent described herein. 4.3.1 One test fitting may be used to qualify fit- ‘tings of similar designs that are no smaller than one- half nor larger than two times the size of the test fitting. 43.2. The test of a non-reducing fitting qualifies reducing fittings that are of the same pattern. 43.3 The untested fitting must have a t / D ratio not less than one-half nor more than three times the t/D of the test fitting. 4.3.4 The pressure retaining capacity of a fitting made of various grades of steel will be essentially directly proportional to the tensile properties of the various grades. Hence, it is necessary to test a pro- totype in only a single grade to prove the geometric, design of the fitting. MSS. STANDARD PRACTICE, SP-79 Mss sTANDARO ee 6. MATERIAL 6.1 Thematerial for fitings shall consist of forgings, bar, seamless pipe, or tubular products, which con- form to the requirements for melting process, chemi- cal composition requirements ofthe forging product form listed on Table 1, ASME/ANSI B16.34, includ- ing notes. 62 Non-Standard Materials When fittings of other materials reference this Standard Practice for non-Standard coverage, they shall be marked as agreed between the manufacturer and purchaser and shall not include the identification specified in 5.1.1 (b) and 5.1.1 (¢) of this Standard Practice. 7. DESIGN AND CAPABILITY ‘These reducers are to be used as a reducing adapter between a straight size socket weld fitting and a smaller size pipe. By the nature of the part configu- ration the minimum body wall thickness at the shank end will always be greater than the nominal wall thick~ ness of the pipe as established by ASME B36.10M with which they are used 8, DIMENSIONS AND TOLERANCES 8.1 General The dimensions and tolerances for reducer inserts capable of meeting these require- ‘ments are shown in Table 3. 8.1.1 Reducer ends shall be at right angles to the axis and provide adequate surface against which to weld (See Figure 2) 8.1.2 Socket Depth The socket depth shall be no less than the minimum values shown in Table 3. 8.1.3 Socket Bore The inside surface of the socket bore shall present a workmanlike finish that is free of burrs. 8.1.4 Minimum Wall In order to provide the re- {quired shoulder for the fillet weld, the socket wall thickness at the welding end shall be at least 1.25 times the nominal thickness ofthe corresponding pipe as shown in Table 3, under column heading Wall Min c 82. Additional Tolerance Tolerances in addition to those listed in Table 3 are as follows: Concentricity of Bores The socket and fiting bores shall be concentric within a tolerance of 0.03 in, Concentricity of Axes The maximum allow- able variation in the alignment ofthe fitting bore and socket bore axes shall be 0.06 inches in I ft. 9. TESTING 9.1 Proof Testing Proof testing for fittings made from standard materials is not required by this Stan- dard Practice. 10. FINISH 10.1 Surfaces must be free of sharp burrs and have ‘workmanship like finish. 11, CORROSION PROTECTION 11.1 Fittings shall be effectively protected against corrosion, Excess oils shall be considered unaccept- able as corrosion protective media. Specialty pro- tection shall be a matter of agreement between the ‘manufacturer and purchaser. 12, CAUTIONARY NOTE REGARDING INSTALLATION OF SOCKET WELDED JOINTS 12.1 To minimize the possibility of cracking of the fillet welds, itis recommended that the shank portion of the reducer insert be withdrawn approximately 0.06 inches away from contact with the bottom of the socket before starting the weld. Likewise the pipe is to be kept away from contacting the bottom of the reducer insert socket before welding. (See Figure 2). 12.2 To facilitate effective penetration in the fillet ‘weld, itis further recommended that the Type 1 re- ‘ducer insert be positioned to provide a root stand off of a minimum of 0.12 inches. (See Figure 1). MSS. 8.5. One tension test to determine yield strength, tensile strength, and percent elongation in 2 in. shall bbe made from each lot of fittings. A lot shall consist of all fittings from the same heat of material of the same starting wall thickness, given the same heat treatment in a furnace controlled within a range of SO'F. The adequacy of the furnace to achieve and ‘maintain temperature uniformity shall be established by annual survey. Alternatively, thermocouples may be attached to a fitting in the lot or to a thermally equivalent mass of material in contact with fitting in the lot, Thermocouples and other temperature ‘measuring recording devices shall be calibrated quar- terly. 8.6 When requested, fitings containing welds shall hhave one across the weld tension test made with the axis transverse to the weld seam for each heat of filler metal, or each heat of filler metal and batch of flux for submerged arc welds, and for a given heat treatment. Only the ultimate tensile strength need ‘meet the minimum requirements of Table 2 (see Appendix X1c). 8.7. Ifthe tension-test specimen from any lot fails to conform to the requirements for the particular ‘grade ordered, the manufacturer may elect to make retests on two additional pieces from the same lot, each of which shall conform to the requirements specified in Table 2. Ifone or both ofthe reests fail to conform to the requirements, the manufacturer may elect to test each of the remaining pieces in the lot. Retests are required only for the particular test with which the specimen did not comply originally. 8.8 Itshall be permissible to cold flatten test speci- mens. 9. HEAT TREATMENT 9.1. Allfittings shall be furnished in the heat treated condition. Hot formed fittings shall be cooled be- low the lower critical temperature prior to heat treat- ‘ment. Fittings shall be heat treated by one or more of the following procedures: STANDARD PRACTICE 9.1.1 Stress Relieving Stress relieving shall be limited only to guide-bar welds or fabrication welds such as pup extensions, etc, unless otherwise agreed upon between the manufacturer and the purchaser. Fittings shall be heated to a suitable temperature below the transformation range, but not less than 1000°F, holding at temperature for not less than one hour per inch of maximum thickness, but never less than one-half hour and cooling in the furnace or in air. 9.1.2 Normalizing Fittings shall be uniformly reheated above the transformation range (austenite range), held at this temperature a sufficient time to achieve uniform temperature throughout the mass and cooled in air. 9.1.3 Normalizing & Tempering Fittings shall be normalized in accordance with Section 9.1.2. They shall then be tempered by reheating to a tempera- ture below the transformation range, but not less than 1000°F, held at temperature for a minimum of one hour per inch of maximum thickness, but not less than one-half hour and cooled in the furnace or in 9.14 Quenching & Tempering Fittings shall be uniformly reheated above the transformation range, held at temperature sufficient to achieve uniform temperature throughout the mass and immediately immersion quenched in a suitable liquid medium. ‘They shall then be reheated and tempered per Sec- tion 9.1.3. Quenching facilities shall be of suffi- cient size and equipped to assure proper and uni- form cooling, 10. TRANSVERSE GUIDED-WELD BEND-TESTS 10.1 Transverse guided-weld bend-tests shall be performed only when specified on the order (see Appendix X1b). 10.2. Transverse-weld test specimens shall be sub- jected to face and root-guided bend-tests. The speci- ‘mens shall be approximately 1.5 in. wide, at least 6 Mss. s STANDARD PRACTICE, ce = pee A LT ane TPE 1 TyPE2® TABLE 3 Steel Socket Welding Reducer Insert Dimensions 41 ginensionsininches Tom) TE SOE SANK | LANG Wat [_ENGTH PE [Toe] paar] pa | usom | nore | MIN cr pe MN | A c ‘a slo] 8 K Sa ae ae | ont [ae Pee | ome sexi [1 | 365 Fy os [as | | 64 250] | ws so] et mae ata} me] |e | | | | a0 ase [se] of 5S A ED TD ET See xe [2] 1] 70 3 | 1050 [2 | 38 [ams [350] ase | os] [75] 106 124 xi Tat? | se [| 100 | | 8 | 36 | 20) 9 [ 381 1x34 1 1 1075, 0 ABS 4 | 112 {| 324 { 612] 193 | 274] 75] 81 ma tepr ts | Ps [ofan] of aes) aoe os] i [cl | xo f2t2] mm) a | ws | | | os | 39] use| ae ip} al mie fef ase fe [sf [op EE) riaxr ft {t oat | 1 [im | uefroe[as| as [ anf af ax[ | x34 2 2 1075 0 1.660 | Bt | 824 | 612} .193| 274) 1.25 | 137] epee te ete ‘afed ad [pals xi [2] 2} mos | 1m] a | | os | 39] as a a5) 13] xia [2] 2] ss) 38 | eo | a [roo] sa | 20] | sat 13s [ast riaxria] 1 {1 | tess | so | roe | nse fran [ras0 | eseo] 29] 312] 3100 x }2[7] 30 0 ism | _@ [a5 [ioe | ais| 226 [ 312] | oof 131 xae [2] 2} 10s] 30 | ism | a5 [ro | ox | si] iss am iar re xi2 | 2 a 865 38 190 | 31 | 1.06 aa] 184 | 235] 131] 156] x3 _[ 2] 2 70 38 1.900 sii [| 43 {3597 assl ase! STANDARD PRACT ‘This Appendix is supplementary and does not include mandatory requirements. 1.0 SUPPLEMENTARY REQUIREMENTS ‘The supplementary requirements SR-1 through SR-14 are not applicable to product furnished to this Standard Practice, except when specified on the purchase order or otherwise agreed upon. The expense or cost of supplementary requirements shall be for the purchaser’s account unless specified ‘on the purchase order or otherwise agreed upon. When specified or agreed upon, supplementary requirements shall have the same force as requirements of the first seventeen sections of this Stan- dard Practice. To be applicable, supplementary requirement details different from those of the SRs of this section must be agreed upon by both the purchaser and manufacturer. a) SR:1_Longitudinal-Bead Underbead Cracking Test in accordance with Appendix X2. Tests shall be performed on each heat of material, b) SR2 Transverse Guided-Weld Bend-Tests shall be performed in accordance with Section 10 on each heat lot of fittings produced. ©) SR:3_ Transverse-Weld Tension Test(s) shall be performed on each heat lot of fittings in accordance with Section 8.6. Section 8.6 requires one test. This supplement would allow purchaser to specify additional tests. 4) SR-4 Fitting base material and welds shall have a maximum hardness of 22 HRC (235 HB). Weld ‘metal shal] have a nickel content of less than 1.00%. One base metal and one weld hardness reading shall be made on each heat lot of fittings. Additional hardness readings shall be performed when specified on the purchase order. ©) SR:5 Actual yield strength shall not exceed the specified minimum yield strength by more than 20,000 psi. 1) SR-6 Notch-toughness requirements other than those specified shall be agreed upon between the purchaser and the manufacturer. 24 STANDARD PRACTICE, SP-15 MSS. 8) SR7 by SRS jd SR10 k) SRL 1) SRe12 m) S$R-13 ‘Notch-toughness tests shall be performed on each heat lot of fittings in accordance with the requirements of Sections 11.1 and 11.3. Each fitting shall be ultrasonically examined. Personnel and procedures shall be qualified in accordance with ASME Section V, Article 5. Acceptance standards shall be as agreed upon between the purchaser and the manufacturer. Fittings furnished in accordance with this Supplementary Requirement shall have purchase order identification marked with low-stress die stamps or interrupted-dot stamps. More restrictive chemical requirements and/or a lower Carbon Equivalent shall be as agreed to bby purchaser and manufacturer. Repair Welding - Base metal repair welding may be performed subject to purchaser approval. Bar Stock Fittings - Bar Stock Fittings shall not be permitted, ‘A deposited weld-metal chemical analysis shall be performed for each classification of filler ‘metal or each submerged-arc electrode/fhux classification identified in the welding procedure(s). ‘Chemical analysis shall be furnished upon request. ‘Butt-welding ends of fittings shall be subjected to liquid-penetrant or magnetic-particle examination. The purchaser shall specify acceptance limits. Nondestructive-examination personnel and procedures shall be qualified in accordance with ASME Section V. 25 MSS. STANDARD PRACTICE P-75, This Appendix is supplementary and does not include mandatory requirements unless invoked by SR-I of Appendix X1. LONGITUDINAL-BEAD UNDERBEAD CRACKING TEST Specimen Size - 2 in, wide, 3 in. long, in direction of rolling, full thickness (t) of material. Grit blast to obtain uniform surface. Weld Bead - Deposit bead 1.5 in. long on surface of specimen. (See Figure X2-1 below.) Electrode - Deposit with a 0.12 in. diameter, E6010 electrode, at a current of 100 amperes and 24 to 26 volts, speed of 10 in. per minute (energy input of 15,000 joules per inch). Pretempering - Preheat or precool to 100°F. Post Treatment - Hold specimen after welding for 24 hours, at room temperature, approximately 100°F and then normalize at 1650°F + 25°F for one hour. This serves to normalize the microstructure and stress relieves simul- taneously. Examination - Saw cut so as to expose center of weld bead and prepare sawed surfaces using 240 grit wet belt ‘grinder. Inspect by wet fluorescent magnetic particle technique. Measure lengths of cracks developed and express as percent of bead length. An average of 50% cracking or less for an average of 10 specimens at the specified temperature is considered acceptable for welding since it has been found that such procedures seldom. cause cracking in full size girth welds. f+ 200. —____» Ki} SSS 2.00 in LLLZZZELLL Longitudinal-Bead Underbead Cracking Test Specimen Figure X2-1 26 List of MSS Standard Practices (Price List Available Upon Request) = Neemser Sez ‘Standard Fines for Contact Faces of Poe Flanges and Connaciag-End Flanges of Vatves and Fitings Se920 ‘Spot Fein fo oreo, kon and Sve!
