She said, “The sink is clogged up.” She said (that) the sink was clogged up.
She told her husband, “I spoke to the landlord.” She told her husband (that) she had spoken to
the landlord.

Direct Speech: Imperatives Reported Speech: Imperatives


He told her, “Turn off the water.” He told her to turn off the water.
He said, “Please wait for the plumber to arrive.” He asked her to wait for the plumber to arrive.
He said, “Don’t turn on the heat.” He said not to turn on the heat.

Rewrite the sentences. Change the reported speech to direct speech.


1. Melissa told her landlord that the roof had leaked and had ruined her sofa.
Melissa told her landlord, “The roof leaked and ruined my sofa.”
2. The landlord said he was sorry to hear about the roof and he was coming right over.

3. The landlord said that the roof was new and he didn’t know why it was leaking.

4. Melissa asked him if he had insurance.

5. The landlord said that he had insurance and not to worry.

6. The landlord said that he had called a roofer and that he was coming first thing in the morning.

7. The landlord said that he was glad she hadn’t tried to fix it herself.

8. Melissa told her landlord that she was glad he had come right over and had insurance.
