Chapter 3
The Meeting of Jacob Barnes and Georgette Hobin

When Jake Barnes met Georgette, he was sitting on a terrace of a cafe called Napolitain,
both of them seemed bored and probably exhausted. We can see it through the lame
conversations that was growing between both of them. Jake was awkward, he seemed to
handle and maintain his mood then tried to begin the conversation with Georgette, but the
unfriendly responses were all he received from her. However, there was something
hidden in Georgette unfriendly responses to his questions, she was telling the truth, she
expressed what she really meant to say, she was being herself without bother to be
friendly or kind.

The scene moved to the inside of a horse-cab, here we can witnessed another
conversations that they made. Georgette was a decisive woman, proved by her action--
tried to kiss Jake. Moreover, we also learned that Georgette was also a frontal speaker,
she easily expressed her dislike of American, or from previous scene at the cafe, she also
suddenly stated that she disliked Paris.

The meeting with Jake led Georgette to meet his friends, such as, Cohn, Frances Clyne,
and Mr. and Mrs. Braddocks. They were all originally from Canada. Jake described
Canadians as the people who “had all the social grace” or in other word, they were easy
to socialize. Proved by the chit chat that they had with Georgette. For example, Mrs.
Braddocks related her to a singer named Georgette Leblanc, or when Frances Clyne
admire Paris (Georgette’s hometown). Those chit chat were their way to befriend
Georgette, yet she remains frontal and cold.

I can sum up that, the meeting between Georgette, Jake, and Jake’s friends is an
important part of the novel in purpose to make the readers recognize the characters
personalities. I can conclude that the meeting between Jake and Georgette is awkward,
the atmosphere seems uncomfortable for the two of them since they are also strangers to
each others. Furthermore, Georgette is frontal, cold, and seems a little bit unfriendly
through her way of speaking. Meanwhile, Jake friends that Georgette meets in the party
have the opposite personalities, they were kind, sincere, and friendly, can be seen through
how they welcoming Georgette as the Fiance of Jake, warm and sociable.
