and its contractors in the execution of Contracts for the Ministry.

2. This Naval Engineering Standard (NES) is to be applied as requir~d·


by any Procurement Executive, Ministry of Defence contract for tbe .
design and supply of Main Power Supply System Switchgear to be fitted
in HM Surface Ships and Submarines.
3. If this Standard is found to be technically unsuitable for any
particular requirement the sponsor is to be informed of the circum-
stances with a oopy to Ship Department Section D191a.
4. Any user of this Standard either within MOD or in outside industry
may propose a change to an NES. Pr'oposals for change;! which are:

a. not directly applicable to a particular contract are to be


made to the sponsor of the NES

b. directly applioable to a particUlar contract are to be dealt.,


with using existing departmental procedures or as specified
in the contract.

spacifies the requirements for the duaign, construction and testing of
circuit breakers, switchboards and load/distribution contras up to and
including 1000 volts ac and 1200 volts dc for electrical power supply'
systems in HM Ships and Submarines.,

0102. The particular functional requirements for equipment covered by this


standard will normally be communicated to the manufacturer in the form
of a "Requirements Drawing" and a Procurement Specification with the
Invitation to Tender or order.

Rated Values

0801. The characteristics of circuit breakers are defined in BS 4752 : Part 1.

0802. The nominal electrical supply characteristics will be specified in the


Procurement Specification. The quality of the power supply is given in
NES 532 Chapter 6 and the tolerances allowed are detailed in DEF STAN
61-5 Parts I and 4.

0603. Each circuit breaker is to be selected to suit the particular supply


system requirement in accordance with the methods detailed in NES 532
and lEC 363.

Mechanical Design

Specification specifiea otherwise and is to be capable of withstanding
